A man from California decided to celebrate his last few days in Hawaii by jumping off a massive waterfall, but was knocked unconscious by the impact and had to be saved by two tourists in the area.
The 21-year-old Shiloh Shahan and his friend were visiting Wailua Falls on the island of Kauai when he decided he wanted to jump off the waterfall. Sources vary on the size of the drop—Hawaii.com says 80 feet, but the San Luis Obispo Tribune says 173 feet—but it was certainly tall enough to knock the young man out when he made contact with the water below.
Shahan got a running start and leapt from the waterfall into the water. When he finally landed at the bottom of Wailua Falls, he was knocked unconscious when his neck snapped back. A father and daughter swimming in the area saw his limp body floating and pulled the man from the water to safety.
The San Luis Obispo Tribune is reporting that Shahan suffered a concussion and tore several muscles in his chest and back. Police and medical personnel were dispatched to the area, but Shahan was able to walk off away from the incident under his own power.
The moment could cost Shahan some money, though, as jumping off the falls is illegal and he could be issued a fine.
“I decided, ‘I want to jump off of this,’” Shahan told the San Luis Obispo Tribune. “I was at a really pivotal point in my life. Everything was changing, and it felt like the right thing to do…I really want to give credit to them for my safety. Without them, I probably wouldn’t have been able to survive.”
