It’s a chance to walk in Nelson Mandela’s footsteps and explore firsthand the country he loved so much.
African Travel is honoring Mandela’s legacy with a themed itinerary set to take guests into the heart of South Africa, throughout historical landmarks and beautiful natural scenery. The trip, named, “In the Footsteps of Mandela” will be an eight-day adventure available only through the company and commemorating the African hero’s birthday on July 18.
Travelers will spend three nights in Cape Town, two in Johannesburg and two on the Kruger Private Game Reserve, just a short flight from Johannesburg.
It’s a trip that is as much a learning experience as it is a vacation, delving into not only the places, but also the type of people that influenced Mandela — from the shops and bars, to meeting a traditional healer and learning about the middle class he helped create.
The pinnacle of the tour is a visit to Robben Island — once where Mandela spent his incarceration, the location is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Museum. The itinerary also includes a trip to the Apartheid Museum.
The final leg of the tour moves from historic Africa into natural Africa on the Kapama Private Game Reserve near Kruger National Park. The authentic Big Five safari will give guests the chance to witness hippo, antelope, zebra, giraffe and various birds up close.
The time at the reserve is meant to provide time for reflection of the journey as well as private moments of relaxation.
Prices for the “In the Footsteps of Mandela Itinerary” start at $3,495 per person.
