Lindblad Expeditions will feature painter Zaria Forman as a guest speaker on two departures of Antarctic expeditions in November.
Forman is known for large-scale paintings of endangered landscapes, such as those in Antarctica, as well as landscapes and seascapes in Hawaii, Israel, Svaalbard, Greenland and the Maldives. She has an affinity with rendering highly complex surfaces such as those of oceans and icebergs.
Forman developed her interest in fragile environments as a child traveling to remote landscapes with her parents. Her mother, photographer Rena Bass Forman, created fine art photographs of the scenes.
Zaria Forman’s paintings are inspired in part by a desire to help preserve the fragile environments of such places as Antarctica by creating awareness of their beauty and the danger of their destruction by changing climatic conditions.
Forman will have many opportunities for fresh inspiration on the two Lindblad Antarctic journeys she will be joining — the 24-day Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands trip as well as the 14-day Antarctica: The White Continent program.
The expeditions will be taken aboard Lindblad’s 148-passenger ship The National Geographic Explorer. Today’s Antarctic voyages — as practiced by Lindblad Expeditions and other operators — follow the model originally created by Lars Eric Lindblad, the father of Sven Olof Lindblad, founder of Lindblad Expeditions.
The senior Lindblad was the first person to take tourists to Antarctica. He created the model for tourist exploration of the continent, which includes small groups, Zodiac landing vessels, educational programs on the ship plus specialist and naturalist guides.
Forman will share her observations and experiences with guests on the Antarctic trips as she is gathering material and inspiration for a forthcoming series of Antarctica paintings.
Forman will also create a drawing expressly for reproduction by Lindblad as a limited edition print that will be given to guests on the two departures she will be joining.
Forman will join the Nov. 7 departure of Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands and the Nov. 27 departure of Antarctica: The White Continent.
