If you think you will ever want to travel to South Africa, this is your time.

South African Airways Vacations is running a sale in coordination with the airline’s Summer Sizzler Sale, which was announced by the airline yesterday.

“As part of South African Airways Summer Sizzler Sale, we are knocking down prices of some of our most popular packages,” said Aaron Trujillo, marketing coordinator with South African Airways Vacations. “We’ve taken the low prices offered by the airline and added our own discounts to the packages.”

SAA Vacations has reduced prices about $500 per person on all of its more than 70 package offerings. And it is offering two of its most popular packages at much steeper discounts, approaching $1,000 off regular prices.

SAA Vacations most popular package, the Affordable South Africa package, which includes four nights in Cape Town and two nights on safari at the 5-star Shepherds Tree Lodge in the Pilanesberg Reserve near Johannesburg, has been reduced from $3,199 per person double occupancy including air, to $2,299.

The South African Sizzler package, which also includes four nights in Cape Town and two nights on safari at Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge, has been reduced from $2,799 to $1,999 per person, an $800 savings.

These are lower than normal low season prices for travel during peak season.

“These prices would be hard to find during the low season,” said Trujillo. “For us to be offering them during peak travel season when children are out of school, there’s no excuse for anyone who wants to ever go to South Africa not to go.”

Terry von Guilleaume, president of South African Airways Vacations, calls the sale a loss leader because, “We’re losing money on this,” he said. “But we want to get people to South Africa.”

Why would any company offer a sale in which it loses business? Long-term planning in coordination with the national carrier as part of a plan to build South African tourism over the long haul.

South Africa is very successful at attracting return visitors. It’s the first-time long-haul trip that is the challenge. Once travelers have experienced the destination, sales resistance dissolves.

SAAV is calling it a flash sale because it has a short booking window. The offer is good for bookings through April 30 for travel June 1-Aug. 10.
