Tauck Returns to Chicago with Ken Burns
Tauck is partnering with Ken Burns to return to Chicago for a five-day event exploring and experiencing the city Sept. 19-23, 2016 through the lens of the themes of American history as portrayed in three different Ken Burns films: “Prohibition,” “Frank Lloyd Wright” and “Jazz.”
This will be the tour operator’s second Ken Burns event in Chicago. The first was held last year. It was one of an expanding repertoire of events conducted by the 90-year old tour operator, an expert in throwing good parties whether stationery or in motion.
Tauck has previously conducted a number of events in partnership with Ken Burns, including an event based in Washington D.C. and based on Burns’ film “The Civil War”; a New Orleans event based on the film “Jazz” and a Cooperstown, N.Y., event based on Burns’ movies about baseball.
Tauck has also offered an event in partnership with BBC Earth called “Walking with Dinosaurs.”
Tauck launched its events division officially in 2004 and started with events based on the Kentucky Derby and the Rose Bowl in early 2005.
The tour operator employs the same logistical skills in conducting events as it does operating tours. The itinerary for an event is a hub-and-spoke configuration in which the guests stay in a headquarters hotel throughout the duration of the event, but move around a sightseeing and activity track throughout the day.
Each day’s activities are organized around a particular theme, such as “The Most American of Cities.” “Beer Wars” and “Architecture that Shaped the City.”
The Tauck team organizes the event like massive clockwork, dividing 100-300 people into subgroups of about 30 each, which move through different parts of the itinerary during the day, then gather together in the evening as one large group for the major occasions and activities, such as performances and dinners.
Ken Burns will appear at the event. He will give a keynote address, meet personally with guests at a reception and pose for photographs with all of the subgroups.
