Tia Stephanie Tours of Ann Arbor, Michigan, is offering a tour that provides an opportunity to dig into the lives of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, two of the most famous and beloved Mexican painters.

“Diego and Frida in Mexico City” is an eight-night program designed for deep immersion into the lives and work of the legendary painters in the city that produced them. The tour is scheduled to take place Aug. 8-16.

The tour will enlist art historians, archaeologists, curators, chefs and guides to lead guests deeply into the world of Diego and Frida, focusing on Mexican art, history, architecture, politics and cuisine.

Highlights of the packed itinerary include a visit to the National Palace to see the giant Rivera mural The Epic of the Mexican People; Teotihuacan, a pre-Hispanic site showing the early use of mural art in Mexico; the Coyoacan neighborhood and the markets that still exist very much like the ones that Frida and Diego often visited; the Frida Kahlo Museum and the Dolores Olmedo Museum, which have the largest collections of Kahlo and Rivera works; Chapultepec Castle; the National History Museum; the Museum of Modern Art of Mexico; the Rufino Tamayo Museum; and the National Museum of Anthropology.

The tour plays to the enduring popularity of Kahlo and Rivera, currently on the ascendance as evidenced by the scheduling of number of exhibitions this year.

Stephanie Schneiderman, founder of Tia Stephanie Tours, recommends combining the experience of some of the current exhibitions of Kahlo and Rivera’s work with her tour of the source of the work.

“We want art enthusiasts to see the historic exhibitions, such as ‘Diego and Frida’ in Detroit at the Detroit Institute of Arts and Frida Kahlo's Garden at the New York Botanical Garden, but then further immerse themselves in Mexico itself.”

This year there are many opportunities to do that.

On March 15 the Detroit Institute of Art opened an exhibition of the work of Kahlo and Rivera, with 70 of their paintings.

The NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is running an exhibition entitled Kahlo, Rivera and Mexican Modern Art Feb. 26-May 31.

The New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx, N.Y., will present a solo exhibition of Kahlo’s paintings beginning May 16. It will be the first solo Kahlo in New York in 25 years.

The Heard Museum in Phoenix will exhibit the traveling show Frida Kahlo – Her Photos beginning Oct. 31 and running to Feb. 8, 2016.

The tour is priced $2,685 per person double occupancy.
