The Roman city of Pompeii was buried under the lava, ash, and pumice of Mount Vesuvius' gigantic eruption in 79 A.D., but some of the old spirits may be aroused during the Pompeii Festival, which takes place in August and September near the ruins of the old city.

Tourcrafters is offering a three-day/two-night package for enjoying the Pompeii Festival. The Music Under the Stars in Pompeii package includes two nights at a chosen hotel, daily breakfast, car rental for three days (with pick-up and drop-off at the airport in Naples or rail station) and a ticket for the Pompeii Festival.

The package is priced from $315 per person double occupancy in the three-star Hotel Andris at Vesuvius National Park. The cost is $355 using the four-star Relais Villa Signorini, an 18th-century villa with garden in Herculaneum, or the four-star Hotel Amieto, which has a rooftop terrace right in the heart of Pompeii.

There is a $15 surcharge for operas, and four are offered: "Tosca," "La Traviata," "Nabucco," and "The Barber of Seville." Ballets will also be performed, including "Swan Lake" and the "Carmen Suite."

That rental car is useful to really explore the full scope of the area. See the rest of the ruins of Pompeii, or  Herculaneum, a second city buried at the same time. Climb or drive up Mount Vesuvius, then visit the Sorrentino Winery on the slopes of the volcano. Of course, don't miss a visit to the lively, thriving Italian coastal city of Naples.

Vesuvius hasn’t erupted since 1944, when It destroyed the villages of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, Massa di Somma, Ottaviano, and part of San Giorgio a Cremano. It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted in the last 100 years.
