Building on the successes of its first Annual Legislative Day last year, ASTA is gearing up for its second such event, which will be held on March 19.

For starters, the 2015 Legislative Day will be larger than last year’s with approximately 50 ASTA members marching up to Capitol Hill for one-on-one visits with government leaders, versus 30 members in 2014.

This year, one of ASTA’s top priorities is ensuring full consumer/travel agency access to airline ancillary services and related fees in the event that Congress should consider those issues as part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization bill. ASTA is also lobbying for Congressional support for the Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act and any other legislation that may be enacted to repeal the ban of travel to Cuba. Another key priority for the Society is to put an end to discriminatory state taxes on car rentals by supporting the End Discriminatory State Taxes on Automobile Renters Act.

“This is the second year of our new Legislative Day event, and we hope it results in strong and lasting relationships between our members and the people who represent them on Capitol Hill,” said Eben Peck, ASTA’s senior vice president of government and industry affairs. “We will need those relationships this year and in the future as we face a slew of policy battles on these issues and many more.”

This year, ASTA will present its first-ever Global Travel Advocate Award to Rep. Sam Farr, co-chair of the Travel & Tourism Caucus, who has long been a champion of the Society and its causes.

The second annual ASTA Legislative Day will be preceded by the ASTA Corporate Advisory Council Meeting on March 18.
