Instagram has stepped up as an unexpected travel guide of sorts, showing us where the best places are to capture truly beautiful moments. Many of us see things like Instagram and the like as glorious time wasters, applications that allow us to fill in the void between appointments and air between conversations with entertainment.
But, thanks to Busbud, a bus booking website that alleviates the burden of city travel, we find that Instagram can helps us get an idea of where we want to go next. The website set out to milk Instagram for all the juicy details available on the most sought-after places in the Unites States and Canada.
The website, which you can reach here, has an interactive graphic that allows you to zoom in and find the most Instagrammed places in various regions.
Spoiler alert: In California, it was Disneyland.
In New York, it was the majesty of the Empire State Building.
And up north in Ontario, it was Niagara Falls.
In each case, you can zoom in on a location and then click on the landmark or attraction, heading to the Instagram page filled with images.
And that is at the heart of a lovely research project, using Instagram to virtually travel, which may just lead to actual vacations.
As far as methodology to finding the most Instagrammed locations, Busbud explains: “Using the location type and name of the popular locations on TripAdvisor across the United States and Canada, we looked at which locations produced the most hashtags for Instagram posts and ranked them in every state, province, and territory.”
From there, we the curious people of the Internet get a load of fancy images as well as some delightful infographics to illustrate travel habits.
For example, here is a list of the top Instagrammed locales by state:
Or if you are into generalities, here is a nice way of seeing in an instant the types of places people choose to snap off a quick picture and upload it to one of the more popular social media spheres:
Those in Canada can pore over the vividly colored graphics as well. For those stateside, we can see that baseball stadiums make a strong impression with Wrigley Field, Coors Field and Fenway Park making the list.
As for types of locations, parks and state parks take up the top two spots, followed by vineyards.
Perhaps that says a great deal about us: We are constantly shut indoors by the daily grind, seeing any moment in a park setting as an opportunity to capture it all for social media.
Perhaps we are just enamored with idyllic beauty.
In any case, Busbud has delivered a terrific tool for travel buffs. If you were aching for a holiday but had no idea as to the destination, start with this list of Instagram portals and lose yourself for a moment.
You may just find your next destination.
