Delta’s newest update to its app is perfect for those more paranoid travelers.
Now, you can sit in the one seat that was open at the gate and constantly update the location of your checked luggage as you wonder how your flight hasn’t boarded yet.
Delta’s News Hub (h/t The Verge) unveiled its latest update to its app, and it’s quite astonishing.
The following video introduces the uninitiated to the app and all the things you can do with it on your smartphone. The most intriguing and one item that should shape expectations moving forward is the addition of a bag tracking innovation.
As you can see, you can now track your bag and a marker denotes where your checked luggage is at the moment. Hopefully, and contrary to airline clichés, it’s exactly where you thought it would be.

Bill Lentsch, Delta’s Senior Vice President, Airline Operations and Airport Customer Service, sounded off on the tracking system: “We’re the first carrier to offer this level of visibility. From the moment our customers drop off their bag, we want them to know we’re looking out for it every step of the way and working to take the stress out of flying one innovation at a time.”
As mentioned, this is the latest innovation spawned from Delta’s move to RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification, tags for its bags.
Back in May, TravelPulse’s Amy Coyne Bredeson reported on the move that would aim to make bag scanning more efficient and reliable.
An offshoot of the technology is something that is just, well, really darn cool. Now you can pop on your phone and see that your bag is indeed with you and the rest of your mates as you embark on your journey.
The release also states that you can expect further updates, such as an iteration that will allow notifications to alert you as to the status of your bags.
Rhonda Crawford, Vice President, Global Distribution & Digital Strategy, explained that the latest update is more than just some baggage curio. There is real depth here.
Crawford explains: “We listen to our customers and know they want a simplified mobile experience that puts the control back in their hands. Fly Delta 4.0 automatically updates when your flight details change, keeping customers informed.”
So the next time you just sitting on the plane waiting for it to take off you can open the phone to discover that your bag is really in tow.
