Many of you think saving up for vacation is the hardest part of planning a holiday. Well, it doesn’t have to be.

Welcome back to another round of Kill It With Tech, where we use modern convenience to solve unrelenting travel headaches.

This week we take a brief dive into the realm of personal finance, which should have put roughly half the crowd to sleep the moment the above phrase was read.

We understand saving for vacation is about as fun as queuing up to get onto an airplane, but it’s an important step. The penny you pinch now may turn into that unforgettable meal or moment you have in the future.

Here are just a few items I have on my radar. However, I am always eager to hear what you might be using, so chime in accordingly.

Personal Finance:

One well-regarded family budget app is HomeBudget with Sync. It’s five bucks, but you can consider that a drop in the proverbial bucket with the amount you save over time by seeing in vivid color how much you are spending.

Say hello to a wonderful and free app, which boasts of spending analytics, a credit score tracker and a credit card location tracker.

Another free app, Wally brings your home finances to light with bright colors allowing for a rather simple way to balance that budget of yours.

Level Money:

This free app lets you link your bank accounts so you have an immediate outlook on your budget, seeing whether you should book that hotel for five nights or four.

For about two dollars you get a budgeting app that is incredibly easy to use. At this point, use of these apps relies on your comfort with its functions. This is one that is worth your time.

If you want to really immerse yourself in a service, you are normally going to pay a subscription fee. LearnVest offers an app as well as expert advice and a financial analysis. This service is a few steps beyond just saving for your vacation, but it warrants noting if you want to really embrace the savings kick.

General Handy Apps:

While you plan for that trip months from now, you will want to target when the perfect moment is to pull the trigger on plane tickets. Hopper makes this chore fun. Trust me, you will check this thing daily.

Keep all of your receipts in one virtual box.

This little app will offer you some big savings over time, allowing you to see rather quickly the various prices of gas in the area. Pennies now mean big results later.

Hotel Tonight:

Now I have yet to use Hotel Tonight, but it seems to be a well-regarded app for finding last-minute deals on hotels in the area. This should come in handy during your vacation or perhaps for that brief weekend getaway that you simply have to take before that grand family holiday later in the year.

Happy Hour Finder:

I fired this up and immediately saw a bunch of places in the area with happy hour deals. Let’s be honest; you aren’t going to skip going out, so just eat a little earlier once in a while. Or, you may just find those gems that offer a late-night happy hour.

Santa’s Bag:

Lastly, we bring you a rather topical app for the season. Now you can keep close track of all the money you are spending on gifts, which should help you budget the generosity.
