Selfie, WhatsApp Save The Day For Pair Of Hikers

If you’re going hiking, make sure to let someone know where you’re headed. And, it would seem, practice your best selfie face. (h/t Mashable) reports an unidentified couple was rescued in the Peak District of Winnats Pass, Derbyshire.

The rescue was of particular intrigue because officials were able to locate the stranded couple thanks to some modern technology, namely a selfie and a ping from WhatsApp.

We’ll let the heroes take it away.

Edale Mountain Rescue Team posted the following image and breakdown of the day’s events:

The post states: "The stuck couple had the presence of mind to send an earlier picture they had taken to the duty leader, as the position they were stuck in could be clearly seen in their earlier selfie! This allowed the team to access their position rapidly.”

Steve Rowe, who is the duty leader and medical officer, spoke with Rowe explained that WhatsApp was also used to locate the couple.

For the uninitiated, we’ve highlighted the app in the past. It’s a great tool to keep in touch with loved ones back at home.

And, apropos to the story, it comes in handy when you are stranded on a ledge.

Thankfully, the couple came back down unharmed.

Rowe continued: “It was an unusual job because of the couple's ingenuity at thinking their way out of the situation. They've used modern technology. Quite a lot of people get into trouble because they rely on technology, but this couple were able to use their mobile phone and photos for their benefit so it was a good result.”

We are confident most of us have nearly tripped thanks to being stuck watching our phones while we walk. In this rare case, it was the almighty selfie that saved the day.

So go ahead and snap away, because you never know when it may get you out of a tough spot.
