5 Places To Go For National Tequila Day

Today, July 24, we celebrate that most feared and respected of libations, tequila, as National Tequila Day returns. Most people think of tequila being a shot or a liquor to mix into your margarita, but the spirit has come a long way with craft distilled and reserve styles becoming more and more common. So where do you want to celebrate national tequila day? Here are five places that are ready and waiting for you.

Tequila Taqueria – Las Vegas, Nevada

Ballys Las Vegas’ newest food and beverage addition has an entire menu of tequila-based cocktails and expansive tequila selection which boasts 43 options including Don Julio 1942, Gran Patron, Jose Cuervo and Avion. Drink specials for the big day include their TacoTini, CC Margarita, and the Tropical Storm, which is kind of a “tequila meets a Dark and Stormy” with Casamigos blanco tequila, Vita Coco coconut water with tropical fruit, and Gosling's ginger beer. And because this is Vegas, they are open until 6 a.m.

La Posta de Mesilla – Mesilla, New México

These guys take their tequila seriously; so much so that they have created an online database to catalog their 150 types of tequila. Like your tequila as a mixer? They have over 20 margaritas to choose from. If you are looking for a bite to eat, they are an institution in the southwest. The adobe building that the restaurant sits in was part of the original compound from the 1840s and is on the National Register of Historic Buildings.

Bone Garden Cantina – Atlanta, Georgia

Tucked away on the west side of Atlanta in a spot you could drive right by and not notice is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the city and maybe the country. The Bone Garden Cantina is artfully and manically decorated in Day of the Dead paraphernalia, and boasts over 60 types of tequila. Their food is out of this world with almost everything ordered a la carte, allowing you to sample a variety of items every time you go. This place is brought to you by the folks who started the Vortex, which, if you haven't been to, go.

La Biblioteca de Tequila – Denver, Colorado

Translating the name to English, the Tequila Library has over 350 tequila and agave spirits to choose from. Chef Richard Sandoval’s second restaurant with the concept, La Biblioteca de Tequila Denver lies right in the middle of the River Front Park area. The food is Latin-Asian inspired and the restaurant turns into a late night lounge where you can “check out” tequilas instead of books. They even have personalized lockers where you can store your booze to come back to at a later date.

    Mercadito – Chicago, Illinois

Everything is awesome on Taco Tuesdays at Mercadito, when they offer up all kinds of specials on their world-famous tacos. But don’t overlook their 40-plus types of tequila, 20 types of mezcal and 12 tequila cocktails on the menu. If you are interested in making your own cocktails, they offer up mixology classes from time to time.

Everyone has a favorite place to go get a shot of tequila or a margarita.  Where do you like to go?  Tell me about yours and link it to me in the comments below.
