5 Quick And Easy Tips To Stay Healthy On Your Travels

5 Quick And Easy Tips To Stay Healthy On Your Travels

It’s not easy to stay fit while traveling the world. Whether it’s a two-week vacation or a round-the-world adventure, traveling means an irregular schedule, mouthwatering local cuisines, and lack of access to the amenities you might normally use to keep you fit and fabulous. But just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean that it’s impossible. My weight used to fluctuate significantly depending on where we were traveling, but with a bit of extra effort and motivation (and experience in 30-plus countries), I've finally figured out what works for me. Here are a few of my tips for staying healthy on the road:

    Make Activity A Priority

Even for a small portion of your day, schedule in an activity. This doesn’t have to mean hitting the hotel gym for thirty minutes. Try exploring your destination via your own two feet, rather than taking a taxi. Hike to a waterfall. Take a surfing lesson. Go dancing. Most importantly, use your vacation to invite activity into your life. Not only will you feel better, you’ll likely return home with more memorable travel experiences, too.

    Prepare Your Meals

One of the primary reasons why I love staying at apartment and vacation rentals is they almost always come with a well-equipped kitchen. Rather than splurging, and eating out for three meals a day, we prefer to prepare our breakfast and lunch. Visit a local market, pick up some fresh ingredients, and play around with new recipes! You’ll save money and calories while still getting to experience great local restaurants, guilt-free.

Try A Few Bites Of Everything

As huge foodies, it is rare that we will ever turn down the opportunity to try something new — or simply savor delicious local goodies while we have the chance! But rather than overindulging, we try to limit ourselves by sampling just a little bit of everything. This is easier if you have a traveling companion, you can share! I’ve also heard of travelers who commit to the two-bite rule — they only take two bites of any indulgence on their travels, leaving the rest behind. The latter takes a lot more willpower and seems a bit wasteful, but it’s always an option!

    Limit Your Alcohol

One of the biggest ways to pack on the calories is by drinking too much alcohol — especially those colorful cocktails! If you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort, then you might find this to be especially problematic. Rather than saying no altogether, consider trading out calorie-packed Mai Tais for something lighter, like a vodka soda water.

Choose A Health And Wellness Getaway

Health and wellness retreats are one of the best ways to restore mind, body, and soul. For your next trip, why not consider a yoga and spa vacation? Most retreat centers offer state-of-the-art facilities, organic and local cuisine, exotic spa treatments, unique workshops, and fun outdoor adventures. Living in Costa Rica, we are blessed to have our choice of health and wellness retreats at our fingertips, but there are plenty around the world (and likely right outside your neighborhood) to choose from.

Most importantly, remember that anxiety and worry can be worse for you than the most decadent piece of chocolate cake. Strive to find balance, but enjoy your travels while you can! These are just a few of the ways I have found to balance my chocolate craving sweet tooth and wine-loving taste buds with a healthy and happy body and soul.

But we want to know — how do you stay fit on your travels?
