5 Ship-Shape Ways To Stay Fit During Your Cruise Vacation

5 Ship-Shape Ways To Stay Fit During Your Cruise Vacation

I have a huge weakness for homemade bread and desserts. From bread rolls and French baguettes to tiramisu and cannoli’s, I love them all! Couple that with the immense culinary choices on board, a pastries station at every turn and so many flavors of gelato at your fingertips. Like me, I’m sure you’re wondering if there’s any possible way to stay fit while cruising the world. Well, worry no more. There is hope! I’ve compiled a list of the 5 ways that will help you escape the bulge on your next cruise vacation. Your waistline will thank me.

Reason No. 1:  Amazing Fitness Centers Onboard

People want to travel the world, meet new people, relax, get away and not have to wonder why their clothes don’t fit anymore once they get back home. The great thing is that most cruise lines get it! They are understanding more and more that a cruise vacation isn’t code word for ‘couch potatoes unite.’

They are providing some really cool and fun options to stay fit on board. In fact, MSC Divina has a huge fitness center fully-equipped with elliptical machines, treadmills, cycling bikes, AquaCycling classes ( We’ll delve into that shortly),  free weights and there’s even a "Power Walking Track" that hugs the entire ship. The panoramic views are incredible! There’s also an aerobics room for group classes like Zumba and yoga. And with personal training sessions offered on board, I don’t even miss out on my awesome workouts that I do with my own personal trainer back home.

Reason No. 2: Special Dietary Dining Options

Ever wonder what’s trending in the kitchens of your favorite cruise ships? Pretty much everything needed to accommodate any special diet you can think of. Executive chefs on board many cruise ships are tailoring much of their culinary crafts to guests that either have allergies/intolerances, who are gluten-free, who are vegetarians/vegans or who just want healthier options.

As a matter of fact, on MSC Divina, they make it easy for you to request any special dietary need at booking and once you arrive on board. MSC Divina and other ships in the fleet including MSC Splendida, MSC Fantasia, MSC Magnifica, MSC Musica, MSC Orchestra and MSC Poesia all prepare dishes that are certified by the Italian Coeliac Association (AIC); home to some of the world’s leading experts on gluten-free dining.

The great news? Flavor is never compromised throughout the preparation process. So you can expect a fantastic dining experience, delectable food made with fresh ingredients and through it all, know that your special dietary needs were met.

Reason No. 3: AquaCycle at sea

When was the last time you took a cycling class underwater? Sounds exciting right? Well, MSC Divina is the only cruise ship at sea that offers Aqua Cycling on board.

Imagine the same electrifying benefits of indoor cycling but instead with a stationary Hydrorider bike smack-dab in the middle of a pool. It’s really an exhilarating experience and really takes onboard fitness to whole new level.

Reason No. 4: Stay clear of elevators and escalators

Did you know that walking doesn’t only help you to lose weight but it also improves blood sugar levels, reduces the risk of osteoporosis, manages your cholesterol and according to the American Heart Association, it even enhances your mental well-being.

From the long hallways, spacious common areas, the panoramic "Power Walking Track" and of course the stunning Swarovski staircase, MSC Divina makes staying fit on board pretty easy. With twenty steps burning a single calorie, taking a nice stroll after dinner could really make a difference.  Of course, if you have any physical or medical concerns, you should definitely consult your physician before embarking on an elevator & escalator-free journey on board.

Reason No. 5: Active and Adventurous Shore Excursions

You can continue your fitness venture when you arrive to port. From hikes to bike tours, the options are endless. Right now, there are exciting bike tours through Northern Europe  between May and September 2015 aboard MSC Splendida.

MSC Cruises has so many itineraries that offer adventurous shore excursions. When you cruise to Costa Maya, Mexico, you can climb the same trail once ventured by 3rd century Mayans with a hike through the Kohunlich ruins. In Charlotte Amalie, US Virgin Islands, you can kayak, hike and snorkel your way around the tiny islet of Cas Cay, just off the south-eastern shore of St. Thomas all in one excursion. Combine art and fitness in Ajaccio, France, where you can take a walking tour past Napoleon's residence, explore Ajaccio Cathedral and visit the Fesch Museum, which houses  a stunning collection of Italian paintings, second only to the Louvre. You name it, there’s an excursion that will surely keep you active during your cruise vacation.
