It's been a year and your visions of travel agent success aren't matching reality, even though "you love travel and want to create immersive experiences for your clients," as Travel Planners International (TPI) puts it.

It's time to get serious and, as TPI says, "think like an entrepreneur, not someone who wants a hobby." To that end, here are six tips from TPI that will bring you closer to your dreams of travel agent success:

1) Create a One-Page Business Plan

The plan should include a company/executive summary, the niche/services, a financial plan and a sales and marketing strategy.

2) Get the Proper Training

TPI notes that "consumers want to work with experts," so courses conducted by such travel industry mainstays as The Travel Institute, the Travel Academy, American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) and Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) are a good idea.

3) Choose a Niche or Specialization

Being a generalist is not ideal - really honing in your niche is that best path to success.

4) Focus on Marketing

This is a must. Optimize your website, establish social media networks that feature appealing vacation images plus sponsored ads, and consider email marketing.

5) Build and Develop Relationships

Having a healthy interaction with clients and travel suppliers means repeat business and recommendations - crucial elements to success.

6) Join a Travel Host Agency

Host agencies allow you to get valuable information from experienced agents. This type of agency also hosts gatherings that provide networking opportunities and potential partnerships.
