If you’re visiting Europe, the probability is high that Paris, along with London, Rome and Florence, are on your itinerary. And why not? They’re some of the most fascinating, historic and beautiful cities in the world!

But once you’ve seen the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben, or the Colosseum and Michelangelo’s David, why not make time to explore some equally interesting and important destinations within easy reach of these famous cities?

You could either get lost in a big group on an organised tour, spend hours on public transportation, or you could rent a car with Auto Europe and explore off-the-beaten-path destinations on your own schedule. Here are my suggestions for the best day trips from Europe’s favorite cities.

    Day Trips from Paris

If it’s your first visit to the romantic French capital, the palace and gardens of Versailles is the first destination to spring to mind when considering a day trip from Paris. This former seat of royal power was once home to the ill-fated Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. The palace, with its emblematic hall of mirrors, was recently renovated, while the gardens are always a pleasure to the eye.

For something more exciting and entertaining, a trip to Disneyland Paris would be right up your alley, especially if you’re travelling with kids. Discover both Disneyland Park and Walt Disney Studios Park during a fun filled day only an hour’s drive from Paris.

History buffs might want to avoid the crowds and rather drive east in their Paris car rental to visit the medieval town of Provins, a UNESCO world heritage site. The town dates back to the 11th century and boasts impressive fortifications.

    Day Trips from Rome

If you are up for a longer day trip, rent a car in Rome and visit to Pompeii is a must. Walk among the streets of the ruined metropolis once you arrive, and learn about life 2000 years ago.

Closer to Rome, the Via Appia Antica or Appian Way Road, offers insight into the activities of the ancient Romans. This major road of the Roman Empire is now a regional park lined with tombs and churches. Drive to the catacombs of San Callisto, the largest and most impressive, and take a walk from there.

    Day Trips from Florence

Although Florence is the capital of Tuscany, a visit to this region of Italy would not be complete without exploring the Tuscan countryside – perhaps the ideal destination to explore with a car rental in Italy. Take the country roads in the direction of Pisa and Lucca. These historic cities are fairly close to each other and within easy reach from Florence by car. Who wouldn’t want to see the famous leaning tower of Pisa? Lucca, a lesser known Tuscan marvel, is surrounded by thick walls and offers visitors memorable tours as it is teeming with beautiful churches and gardens.

    Day Trips from London

Most tourists would certainly pick the UNESCO site of Stonehenge if they had to choose only one day trip from England’s capital. Fortunately, it is possible to combine a trip to this ancient stone circle with visits to Windsor Castle (make this your first stop) and the picturesque city of Bath, home to another world heritage site - the ancient Roman Baths. While this is one of the longer day trips on our list, with a car rental in London this drive is a great way to extend your trip and it is surely worth every minute on the road.
