Experiencing Spain in a New Way

Visiting Madrid for the fourth time, I expected to see nothing new. When we revisit favorite cities, we often develop a route so we can see our favorite museums, neighborhoods and sights. But we were trying to find new ways to see this city and therefore we opted to spend our time with new guides.

Our guide for the Royal Palace was unbelievable and unlike many guides, expressed such excitement about particular rooms of the palace. We are adding a tour that will show you the Royal Tapestry Factory as well, because you will want to know how these huge wall coverings are constructed, still today, without heavy machinery.

We went to a wonderful very local restaurant called Botin where the owner took us on a tour of the wine cellar and the kitchen. Food was incredible and the building original. This too will be on our site soon.

But whoa! I have seen the painting “Guernica” by Picasso more than once, yet I left the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía with a whole new understanding of this incredible work of art. Barry and I were both so moved by our guide’s explanation that a week later we found ourselves in the town of Guernica, where it all happened.

Both are incredible stories and the town itself is dedicated to peace. In Guernica, we experienced the most moving of war museums, or perhaps it is best to call it a peace museum. Nothing in our lifetime has left us so drained and moved yet with a real understanding of how this town was devastated and why, which is the most upsetting part.

Both the Sofia Reina Museum and a quick trip to Guernica is time well spent. Guernica will be on our site as part of our tours from Bilboa and San Sebastian.
