Four Business Development Best Practices That Benefit All Travel Professionals

Four Business Development Best Practices That Benefit All Travel Professionals

Summer is here, and so is the heatwave. I’m so excited to bring you part two of my blog series. Now that you’ve completed your spring cleaning, you have more physical space in your office and more time in your day to focus on new business development for your travel company.

On the business development side, one of my favorite “follows” is Andrew Medal, serial entrepreneur, contributor for Entrepreneur Magazine and creator of one of the fastest-growing Facebook groups focused on entrepreneurs and business development. Andrew’s “Four Laws First-time Entrepreneurs Must Adopt” is a list of best practices that both new and experienced travel agents alike can benefit from.

Stop Talking and Start Doing: Don’t suffer from “wantrapreneurism.” Instead, “just do it.” Choose one business development or marketing tool you’re currently not using and use it. For example, at Nexion, we have a whole host of amazing business development tools that are at our agents’ fingertips, including Agent Snapshot, a new (and free) lead generation tool offered through our sister company and consortia affiliation through

Stop Building and Start Testing: It makes no sense wasting time, energy, effort and resources before you’ve determined if there’s even a demand for whatever it is you are building or offering. Testing your ideas saves you time and helps you offer something people actually want. At Nexion, we have great relationships with our supplier partners, and their BDMs are a great sounding board to test new business development ideas along with our own stellar business development team.

Stop Selling and Start Sharing:  Nobody wants to be sold these days. People want to be engaged with your story, vision and the value of your service. Testimonials are a great way to share the benefits of your service. Learn the art of storytelling and share your excitement about your travel niche or specialty, the opportunity and the benefits your agency provides, and share that. At Nexion, we offer our members a fabulous and award-winning tool called OnTarget – a free, exclusive and interactive online marketing center that offers social media and email marketing solutions, including Facebook and Twitter postings, to maximize your reach through the art of storytelling and engaging photos.

Stop Being Busy and Start Being Productive: There’s a difference between being busy and being productive. I used to catch myself being and feeling “busy” all of the time. Busy is a mental state. Productive is actually accomplishing tasks and objectives that help move your business forward. We all have a million things that need to be done at any point in time. Going back to my earlier blog, it’s imperative that you prioritize, set aside specific time for specific tasks and the times of day when you’re most effective. Use this information to be productive, and lose the mindset of “busy.”

I challenge you to implement one or more of these four “Laws for Entrepreneurs Must Adopt,” and I also invite you to consider Nexion as your host agency.  Whether you’re new to the business, an experienced agent, an agency with multiple agents or focus on corporate business, Nexion’s got your back, and we’re ready to work with you to turn these best practices into profits for you and your business.
