Markus Nufer knew at a young age that he wanted to cook; fifteen in fact when he began in Zurich, Switzerland.  A Swiss native, he earned his degree from the Swiss Culinary Academyat only 19 years of age.

In 1991, he moved to Fiji to work with Regent Four Seasons Resort and then to Hong Kong to work at the Mandarin Oriental.

He went onto work with Crystal Cruise Lines, working up to Executive Chef for the entire fleet, a position he held for 16 years. He has now returned to the Outrigger-owned and managed, Castaway Island Resort.

"My home is Fiji," says Nufer.  "I live here with my wife Maureen and my son Nicholas.  We got married on the island of Modriki in 2000, where they made the movie "Castaway" with Tom Hanks. Two years later we built our home which sits on 16 acres of land in Momi overlooking the bay outside Nadi."

Castaway features Water’s Edge, their main restaurant and buffet open for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as Nuku Marau, their poolside grill and the Sundowner Bar offering wood fired pizza and tropical salad bar.

There is also Restaurant 1808 which is the resort’s Fijian Asian dining concept open year round for dinner and part of the year for lunch as well.

Chef Markus started his tenure this month and is happy to be back on Fiji. "It’s great to be home and I’m looking forward to working with the Castaway Island team," he says.
