We received news this week that Hyatt Ziva Cancun has successfully been awarded Green Globe Certification, marking the first Playa Hotels & Resorts property to receive the eco-friendly accolade but certainly not the last.
Hyatt Ziva Cancun, which celebrated its grand opening a little over a year ago, served as the pilot “Green” property for Playa Hotels & Resorts. The remainder of our resorts in Mexico are currently undergoing the certification process, with an expected completion by the end of 2017.
The Green Globe Certification, known for sustainable tourism, is only available to organizations committed to having a positive impact both on a local and global level. To ensure the credibility and integrity of the company, the certification process is a rigorous one and requires dedication on the behalf of all employees involved.
The certification criteria is organized into four key themes: Sustainable Management, Social/Economic, Cultural Heritage and Environment and is broken down into four phases: Standards, Solutions, Audit and Certification. The audit is done by a third party to ensure that the property is complying with the organization’s standards for Travel & Tourism. While the purpose of Green Globe is to integrate sustainability protocols into daily resort
operations, the certification is part of a larger company-wide initiative called “Playa Green”.

The initiative is meant to bring Playa Hotels & Resorts employees across various destinations together to work toward one common goal: to better serve our local communities and ensure that the wellbeing of our staff and stakeholders are cared for long term. With practices spanning multiple countries, the initiative is meant to remind employees how their daily actions have a global impact on the ecosystem.
It’s the small changes that when combined serve the greater good. It’s about making a conscious decision to use a glass instead of a plastic cup. It’s buying and eating locally sourced produce and goods. It’s creating butterfly gardens at local schools to help strengthen the butterfly population unique to Jamaica.
It’s dedicating a morning to cleaning the local beach in Cancun. It’s volunteering at a local farm in upstate New York to ensure that the animals are fed. Ultimately, it’s the simple changes in everyday behavior that can have a large impact on your own life, your community and the environment as a whole.
While Green Globe and Playa Green both require a large undertaking, the results of initiatives like these directly showcase the integrity of the company that we work for. It holds our staff (and guests) accountable for their actions while caring for the environment at a global level. It shows the actions (however small) you take in everyday life and the slight changes you make in your daily habits can have a positive impact on the environment at a global level. Won’t you join us?
