Salt Lake City: 7 Must See Attractions

Salt Lake City: 7 Must See Attractions

As many of you know, we spend a lot of time road tripping the West Coast and Midwestern states. They’re an easy road trip route from our home, and lead us to some great road trip destinations.

Over the past six years, we’ve visited Salt Lake City at least eight times either at the beginning or the end of our road trips. We always try to do at least one tourist attraction while in town, rather than just pass through. Today I wanted to share my list of favorite attractions that we’ve seen while in Salt Lake City:

    Big Cottonwood Canyon

I have to start my list off with Big Cottonwood Canyon. As a road tripper, I always appreciate the natural beauty of a road trip, and the drive along Big Cottonwood Canyon is spectacular. If you follow the road to the end, you`re greeted with views of Salt Lake Valley. This road also leads you to some spectacular hiking trails. We spent last summer exploring the Twin Lakes trail, through stunning alpine scenery, rushing waterfalls, and several lakes. I highly recommend a drive through the Big Cottonwood Canyon.

     The Great Salt Lake

Also known as America`s Dead Sea, the Great Salt Lake is the largest salt lake in America, making it an intriguing tourist attraction.  We visited the lake from Antelope Island. It cost $10 per car, but was worth the trip. We didn’t go into the water for a swim, just admired it from a far. The drive to the lake is spectacular.

I’ve previously visited the salt flats in the Bad Water Basin in Death Valley, California, so the Great Salt Lake was an exciting stop for me. If you’re interested in learning a bit more about the Great Salt Lake, stop into the visit center. It offers lots of information on the area and the lake.

For the number of times I`ve been to Salt Lake City, I`ve never had a chance to visit the Bonneville Salt Flats. This remains on my road trip bucket list, and I’ll hopefully get to visit next summer.

    Antelope Island State Park

We ventured through Antelope Island State Park to get to the Great Salt Lake and were pleasantly surprised to see a large herd of bison. I love seeing animals while road tripping; especially animals that I wouldn’t normally see back home. This is also a beautiful drive through Antelope Island State Park to get to the Great Salt Lake. It reminds me a bit of driving to the Grand Canyon.

    Gilgal Sculpture Garden

This was a unique find for us. We actually stumbled across this place while driving in circles looking for another attraction in town. That’s one of the joys of road tripping; finding random things along the way.

One of the reasons why I added Gilgal Sculpture Garden to the list was because of the unusual sculptures found in the park. We’re always looking for off-the-beaten-path things to explore, and this garden sure hit the mark for us. I’ve yet to find anything like this while road tripping and it was a unique, yet odd experience. The sphinx was my favorite sculpture in the park.

    Temple Square

This was an attraction that kept coming up on lists of things to see while in Salt Lake City. We visited Temple Square a few years back. We spent an afternoon exploring the beautiful gardens and interesting buildings, and generally just walking around. The church is massive; a remarkable thing to see.

While walking around, we did have several people approach us to chat with us. The beauty of being on a road trip is we always get the same exciting response from people. It was a great experience sharing with others our road trip stories of where we’ve been, and where we were headed.

Someone recommended doing the Convention Center tour, but we didn`t have enough time. Don’t underestimate how massive Temple Square is, and make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.

    Capitol Building

I love being a tourist while road tripping through other cities. The Capitol Building was another highly recommended tourist stop. We visited the Capitol Building early one Sunday morning; we ended up walking around the grounds with no one around. It`s a beautiful building. We stopped for a few pictures before moving on with our road trip.

    Cathedral of the Madeline

One of my road trip friends is a huge fan of old churches, and I`m thankful she recommended we stop here. This is a beautiful old church, and inside is just stunning. Take some time to walk through the church and really appreciate the architecture, the different colors, and the beauty of this church.

We seem to discover something new every time we pass through Salt Lake City, with the Cathedral of the Madeline being our latest find.

Although Salt Lake City has a great list of winter activities, we don`t generally road trip through Salt Lake City during the winter months, and thus haven`t included any of these attractions in the list.

What`s your favorite thing to see while in Salt Lake City?
