The Cream of the Crop of Melbourne, Australia

The quirky capital of Victoria is full of culture and artistry, where modern movements coexist with the ancient past. The result is a wonderland for the senses and a feast for the eyes. You could spend a day, or a lifetime, in Melbourne and never do the same thing twice. As Australians we have spent many a holiday in this amazing city. Following are a few of our favorite things to do. These are the cream of the crop.

    Eureka Skydeck

If you are afraid of heights than this one might not be for you. The Skydeck features “The Edge,” which provides the most spectacular views of the city, but just be forewarned, you will be completely suspended in a glass box. However, the trade-off is that the layout of Melbourne will become clear. We recommend this activity as a great starting point for your trip to the city.

St. Paul's Cathedral and Flinders Station

It's nice to find a true piece of iconic history in a place that is known for its modernity and somewhat cosmopolitan nature. St. Paul’s is constructed in the traditional Gothic style, and is also right across the street from the historic Flinders Street Station. These two together bring quite a bit of old world charm and will make you feel as though you have stepped back in time. The good thing is they are both right in the heart of the city so they can be made part of a larger itinerary of prime Melbourne attractions.

    Ride Through the Dandenongs

A short one-hour drive east of the city towers the Dandenongs, and they are well worth the trip. This incredible mountain range is famous for its lush, thick forest of ash trees, and smattering of small stores and villages throughout. However, perhaps the most spectacular thing about the Dandenong mountain range is the ways in which you can explore it. Take a ride on the narrow gauge rail line that cuts right through the middle of the Blue Dandenong Ranges for a unique experience. It's truly unforgettable.

    Queen Victoria Market

If you are one of those people that just has to have a souvenir from your travel destination, then this is the spot. Here, numerous knickknack type gifts abound, as well as some pretty amazing fresh food. The best part, they literally have things from all over the world here at the market. If you make a day of it, that's no problem. There are a couple of places onsite that serve amazing breakfast and lunch. The price will surprise you too — the food at the market is pretty inexpensive.

    Explore the Laneways

The whole reason you come to Melbourne is for the exploration. The city is meant to be discovered as you walk around each turn and through each laneway. Seek out quaint art galleries and shops, independent theaters, and so much more. Exploring these myriad pathways will truly give you a sense of this stunning city. Plus, you will walk away with some pretty unique finds too.

Watch the Sun Set on Phillip Island

Here’s a great way to end your trip: sunset at Phillip Island. It is a couple of hours from the city, but the remote destination and serene atmosphere are incomparable. After exploring so much culture, and seeing so much topography, sometimes a final night at the beach is just what is needed to rejuvenate one's soul.
