Tips For Eating Healthy While On The Road

Tips For Eating Healthy While On The Road

Eating healthy is pretty important in general, but it is of the utmost importance when you’re on the road. Road tripping takes a lot out of you to begin with; it’s mentally exhausting driving for hours at a time, and we’ve all experienced a bout of “white line fever.” Add in the sluggishness that comes naturally after a meal of fried, greasy food (fare which dominates the menus at most road trip pit stops) and a few days on the road can leave you run down and exhausted.

In this week’s blog post, I wanted to focus on some tips to help you eat healthy while on the road. These tips of course really depend on your road trip style. We often road trip with limited funds, and a short time schedule. This doesn’t leave us a lot of free time to pull into diners and enjoy a delicious lunch before hitting the road again.

Here are a few tips to help with eating healthy while on the road:

Bring a case of water with you:

Taking along some H20 serves several purposes. Staying hydrated is important, especially while road tripping. Traveling with a case of water in the car not only limits the need to stop at gas stations along the way and pay a higher price for water, but it limits that temptation to snack.

    Travel with healthy snacks:

Before we hit the road, we always stop at a grocery store and load up the car with meal options and healthy snacks. If you’re on the road and feeling hungry, you can just grab a snack from your car to tide you over until your next meal. This also helps limit the desire to stop at a fast food place and grab a snack.

We often stop at fast food restaurants along the way to grab free ice for our cooler or a quick bathroom break. It’s tempting to grab an ice cream or hamburger while there, but having snacks with you while road tripping will hopefully limit the need to purchase unhealthy snacks along the way, and save some money.

    Travel with a cooler:

I love road tripping with a cooler. Not only is it great to store food in, but it’s also handy to chill drinks in during the summertime. Coolers do take up a lot of room in the car, but they’re also great to have if you get hungry and are miles from the next food stop.

We often prep meals before we leave for our road trip. We store them in our cooler for the road trip, and then stock up on food as needed.

    Choose healthier meals at diners:

We don’t often stop at restaurants or diners while road tripping as we opt to pack our own food, but there are times we need a break from the car, or are too lazy to restock our cooler. We also like to stop from time to time and have a bit of a foodie experience.

If you do stop at diners or restaurants along the way, try to stay away from fried or greasy foods. Most places offer healthy meal options on their menus. You will feel noticeably better while road tripping.

Road trip tip: It’s a good idea to get out of the car from time to time and move around. I often use gas station stops as a great opportunity to stretch my legs, go for a short walk around the gas station and get some exercise. This also helps stimulate your mind and the exercise will help you feel great.
