    Traveling With a Personal Photographer

    Traveling With a Personal Photographer

Have you ever taken the trip of a lifetime, only to return home and realize your photos don’t do justice to the beauty of the destination you just experienced? Or worse, maybe you spent all of your time on vacation taking photos ... and zero time actually soaking in the magic of the destination while you were there?

Let’s face it — in our culture where selfie deaths now outnumber shark attacks, we clearly have an addiction to staring at our phones when we should be staring at our surroundings. Enter: traveling with a professional photographer.

On our recent trip to Mexico with Cantimplora Travel, we had the opportunity to step out from behind the lens and experience the marvels of Mexico while knowing that a professional photographer was capturing all those priceless memories we would want to take home.

Daniel, our photographer half, had this to say: Relying on someone else to take photos was at first a bit counterintuitive. I take my camera everywhere. Going anywhere without it is almost like leaving behind a piece of my arm. So traveling with a professional photographer (and being encouraged to leave my camera gear in the hotel) was an interesting challenge. But it was certainly an experience I’m grateful to have embarked on.

I honestly struggled in the beginning to keep my camera in my bag and enjoy being in the moment. But once I started to let go of the compelling urge to take pictures around every bend and instead trust that my photographer had me covered, I found myself really enjoying the travel experience in a new way. What’s even better, Casey and I finally have professional photos of us traveling as a couple! Not just selfies cutting ourselves off at the neck, but beautiful candid shots of us exploring the world together.

Hiring a private photographer isn't in most people's travel budget. However, when you travel with a small group, this luxury suddenly becomes more accessible. That's precisely the case with Cantimplora Travel, a curated travel company that leads small groups on off-the-beaten-track adventures in Mexico and takes professional photos along the way.

Our small group of 12 toured around the state of Oaxaca, where Cantimplora Travel let us in on all the best secrets and off-the-beaten-path attractions of the area. From Mezcal tastings to the local markets to ancient Zapotec archeological sites to the surreal Hierve el Agua, Cantimplora Travel already knew the best spots for photos, and was knowledgeable enough to tell us about the history and provide insights regarding each spot we visited.

Some Tips For Traveling With Your Own Photographer

Depending on your budget, try booking with a small group tour that includes a photographer. This essentially allows you to split the cost of the lensman among all participants.

Turnaround time for your images may be a few days, so if you do want to instantly share with friends and family, then it's best to bring your phone along to snap a few pics for your favorite social media channels. One thing we loved about traveling with Cantimplora Travel is that they provided a few photos each morning. It was a great way to start the day, and kept our Instagram overflowing with gorgeous images.

Plan your outfits accordingly. If you'll be traveling to multiple regions make sure that you have the appropriate attire for the weather and that you pack enough clothes that you won't be wearing the same outfit on multiple days. You don’t get to travel with a private photographer every day, so make sure you look good in your photos when you can!

Most importantly, relax. Your photographer will let you know if you need to adjust or move slightly one way or the other to get the perfect shot. Otherwise, you may just forget that they are even there snapping candid moments that you'd never be able to capture yourself — but that you'll remember forever.

Do you take your own photos while you are traveling? Would you consider traveling with a personal photographer?
