Vibrant, Energized and Stimulating: Revisiting Cartagena

Vibrant, Energized and Stimulating: Revisiting Cartagena

We hadn’t been to Cartagena for a long time, but had heard that many changes had occurred. Cartagena, today, is magical and unforgettable and I find myself talking about it constantly since our visit. Truthfully, Barry and I are often overcome by our latest adventure, but our trip to Cartagena, Bogota and Panama City (more on those another time), really impressed us.

The walled city of Cartagena is unlike any we have encountered in past travels, and those expectations result from many trips to ancient sites and old cities. While some remained beautiful and relevant, others were lacking and we feel that is because people were not inhabitants in their own city. But Cartagena is vibrant, energized and stimulating.

It is clean and friendly and even the buildings that were not yet restored were colorful and the potential was obvious. The streets are filled with commerce — shops, street merchants and  people moving merchandise down narrow streets using all methods of transportation.

Balconies with bougainvilleas cascading down multiple floors in front of restaurants, which ranged from local street food to celebrated chefs in their own locations, all beautifully designed, took our breath away. One dining experience had tables leveraged over a glass floor with a stream underneath and subtle lighting – when we say "stellar" we mean just that. And designers and clever store owners with sophisticated styles and clothing and home furnishings from around the world as well as local artisans call this city home.

Old Cartagena has two parts, the historic district and the Getsemani, the working class colonial neighborhood which was also once enclosed by a wall. Our experiences will be reflected in our new excursions, from a cultural immersion to a shopping tour; everything with the goal of introducing you to a city that will welcome you with open arms.
