With all those white sandy beaches and the shining sun beaming down on you, Corfu might not be the best place to be proactive. It’s one of those places that is best for relaxation and indulgence, and many tourists flock there each year to do just that. We docked here during our cruise, and had the pleasure of getting to know this Greek island paradise a little more. If you are off to Corfu, whether it be via a cruise, or a stay on the island, there is a lot you can do to keep yourself busy.

    Take a Trip to Paleokastritsa

Paleokastritsa is a village on the northwest side of the island, and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful on Corfu. Here there is something for everyone — beautiful beaches on which to sun yourself, lots of little shops, bars, and restaurants if you fancy taking a wander around, and tucking into some good food. There’s even a monastery if you would rather get into some history.

Go to a Greek Folklore Night

Many of the bars or “tavernas” offer an evening of Greek folklore once a week. This will include traditional Greek dancing and performances, and if you ask your accommodation about the best one to visit, you might find a less touristy version. Sit back with a drink and learn all about Greek performance art.

    Visit the Old Fortress

Palaio Frourio, or the Old Fortress, is a spot where, once upon a time, all the residents of Corfu lived. It was built in the 16th century by the Venetians, and from here you can take in breathtaking views of the island and ocean.

    Hike the Corfu Trail

All around the island there is a trail which runs through all kinds of landscapes and offers picture-perfect views. In total, the trail is 220 kilometers (137 miles) long, so it’s obviously a path to enjoy in sections (unless you are a very keen hiker!). This is the perfect route for those who wish to take a scenic stroll, or others who fancy a more rigorous afternoon and want to cover plenty of ground.

    Do Some Water Sports

Corfu is one of the best places to do water sports in the Mediterranean. Here you can paraglide, sail, parasail, water ski, scuba dive, or simply snorkel. The water is relatively calm, so the clarity for underwater adventures is very good, and if you want to get into underwater photography this is definitely the spot for it.

There are companies all over the island that offer a range of deals for water sports, so ask the nearest local for recommendations.

    Explore the Sleepy Villages

While the coast has plenty of opportunity, inland you’ll find numerous laid back villages that are fun to explore if you’re happy enough with meandering around. Hire a car for the day and do a tour of a few of these, stopping for refreshments along the way. Stroll through the cobbled streets of Paleá Períthia, wander through the fishing port at Kassiópi, or discover Kérkyra’s Old Town.
