Travel and sports are without a doubt two of the most commonly shared passions among human beings anywhere.
So naturally, combining the two makes the resulting experience that much more memorable.
That's good news for college basketball fans traveling for this year's 2016 NCAA Tournament, better known as March Madness. Because few other events in sports bring as much excitement, drama and heartbreak to the table as does college basketball's 68-team playoff.
Considering upsets are inevitable and only one team can win it all, it's safe to say a majority of fans will be left shaking their heads in disappointment, frustration and, in some instances, disbelief.
Fortunately for many of those traveling for the Big Dance, a gut-wrenching defeat will define just one half of the overall experience.
Even for die-hard supporters, a trip to the NCAA Tournament is as much about the experiences had before and after the two-hour battle on the hardwood as it the result.
And if nothing else, at least you made some of your friends and family jealous with all of those Facebook posts.
There's nothing like actually being at the arena to take in a tournament game, hearing the schools' respective bands and cheerleaders and seeing the ball go through the net for yourself, but along the way there are road trips, flights, hotel stays and meals.
So even when your bracket is busted, your trip isn't.
And for those lucky enough to see their team survive and advance to the next round and a new destination, the experiences will continue.
This year, the 13 host cities from the first round through the Final Four comprise underrated gems like Providence, Rhode Island and Spokane, Washington as well as some beloved favorites including Brooklyn, Chicago, Philadelphia and Houston.
Given its one-and-done format, few other events allow traveling fans to cross off so many bucket list destinations and sports experiences in one fell swoop.
However, the best part of traveling amid the madness by far is connecting with fellow fanatics. Sure, there's a lot to love about your living room this time of year - especially considering no one can see you cry when your bracket falls apart - but nothing enhances the jubilation of a big win like being able to celebrate it with a new group of friends that share your passion and team colors.
Likewise, there's no better support system following an excruciating defeat.
Yes, you can probably find other college basketball fans at the local watering hole or your buddy's basement, but you won't be able to celebrate and bond over your dedication the same way traveling fans will.
While at least 67 teams and fanbases are guaranteed to come home empty handed this year, those who travel for the tournament are certain to come away with new experiences, some new friends and, in most cases, a sports memory that will last forever, good or bad.
