Sandals Resorts International suspended new arrivals at Sandals Grande Riviera Beach and Villa Golf Resort in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, following “substantial landscaping damage caused by Hurricane Sandy,” the company said. Sandals Grande Riviera will remain closed to new guests through Nov. 2 to “undertake an extensive clean-up program.”

In addition, Sandals’ delayed the opening of its Beaches Ocho Rios property until Nov. 15 after significant landscaping and beach damage due to Hurricane Sandy, which also forced the suspension of renovation work at the property. Beaches Ocho Rios was scheduled to reopen on Nov. 1 following a planned closure in order to complete an $18 million enhancement.

New arrivals at the Sandals Grande Riviera are being offered the option to stay at a Sandals resort in Montego Bay, or at Sandals Whitehouse on Jamaica’s south coast, which were unaffected by the storm. Guests also can re-book at Sandals Grande Riviera following its re-opening, subject to availability. Guests currently staying at Sandals Grande Riviera have the opportunity to continue their vacation at the resort or relocated to one of the Montego Bay properties or to Sandals Whitehouse.

“The damage caused by this storm, whilst completely out of our control, has meant we are simply unable to offer the same high standard of vacation that people expect from us,” said Gordon “Butch” Stewart, chairman of Sandals Resorts International. “Therefore it is only correct that we take this step to allow us time to put things right. Anything else would mean shortchanging our loyal guests and travel partners and that is not something we are ever prepared to consider.” Stewart added that Sandals has “just invested $60m and $18m respectively on Sandals Grande Riviera and Beaches Ocho Rios.”
