Northern Italy Quake Damages Medieval Legacy of Emilio-Romagna
The 6.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked Bologna and the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy killed at least six people, injured at least 50, left many homeless and destroyed an 800-year-old bell tower, but will have little impact on tourism to Italy. The larger damage is to the very identity of historic towns that have lost the very touchstones of their history. Though Bologna is a city rich in history, home to the world’s oldest university and one of the best-preserved medieval city centers, it is mainly visited by Americans in transit between Venice and Florence. Hyatt Unveils Major Hotel Expansion Plans for Latin America
Hyatt Hotels Corporation has completed its previously announced acquisition of the 756-room Hotel Nikko Mexico from Japan-Mexico Hotel Investment Co., Ltd. for approximately $190 million. The hotel has been rebranded as Hyatt Regency Mexico City. Hyatt also announced plans for eight new Hyatt-branded hotels in Latin America, in addition to four previously announced hotels under development, for a total of 12 Hyatt hotels under development in Latin America. When these properties open, there will be a total of 20 Hyatt-branded hotels in the region. Read More

Orbitz Survey Finds Americans Plan to Spend More on Travel This Summer
More Americans plan to spend more on travel this summer than they did last summer, according to an Orbitz survey of 1,000 U.S. travelers. Fifty-three percent said they plan to spend more than $1,500 compared to 39 percent in 2011. Seventy-seven percent plan on taking a vacation this summer, with 56 percent planning to drive and 39 percent planning to fly. Sixty percent said that gas prices would have an impact on their travel planning. Read More
