July 09, 2012 11:05 PM

Virgin Atlantic Airways said it will make the best-selling novel “50 Shades of Grey” available for passengers to enjoy as an audio book during flights. The book’s content has caused controversy since it first went on sale several weeks ago and the airline said it wants it flyers to experience the novel.

The book follows the exploits of Anastasia Steele, a virgin who meets a wealthy businessman with particular tastes in the bedroom. It has already sold over 10 million copies to an audience hungry to find out how their relationship grows.

“’50 Shades of Grey’ has quickly gained notoriety as a ‘naughty novel,’ leaving some women embarrassed to read their copy in public,” said Sarah McIntyre, Virgin Atlantic spokesperson. “We want to give our female passengers the chance to enjoy the book in an intimate way, without prying eyes.”

Audio books will be another new feature of JAM, Virgin Atlantic’s new in-flight entertainment system. It features a touch-screen control panel allowing passengers access to over 300 hours of entertainment.
