7 Top Things To Do In Sweden
Roam Where You Want To
The Swedes believe in Allemansrätten, which is the freedom to roam, well, anywhere. If you’re a nature lover or a keen hiker or camper, you’ll love this as much as we did.
One of the top things to do in Sweden is hiking. Go hiking in the forests, picking wild berries, or camping wherever you please (although not in private gardens, we don’t advise that!).
You won’t have to pay for accessing nature trails or setting up a tent. And every one of Sweden’s 100,000 lakes is open for you to go swimming in. It’s one of the best things to do in Sweden in Summer. And women traveling solo will be happy to know that Sweden is one of the safest countries to visit.
Cycle Along The Göta Canal
Cycling is a big deal in Sweden, as in many European countries. They have excellent infrastructure for it, and with such beautiful scenery, we couldn't pass up the opportunity for a bit of vacation biking.
There are several places where you can rent a bike for an hour or two, or even for the day. We recommend cycling the towpaths of the Göta Canal. Stop for a breather and watch the historic canal boats sail on by.
Cruise The Archipelago
With so many great things to see and do in Sweden, it truly deserves its title as the Nordic gem of Scandinavia. The Stockholm archipelago is made up of thousands of islands. Okay, some of them are pretty small, but that doesn’t make them any less exciting, and we found that an archipelago cruise of the region made a fun day trip.
Choose between a leisurely ride on a passenger ferry or a shorter and more private excursion on a zippy motor boat. Or charter a boat and go sightseeing at your own pace.
Stand In Awe Of The Aurora Borealis
The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights as they’re also known, are an amazing sight to behold. More frequently seen in March and September, they’re the result of electrically charged solar particles colliding in the sky.
But we weren’t too concerned with the science of it. Because the sheer beauty of this richly-hued display took our breath away.
We know you’ll adore this natural light show in Arctic Europe, too. So be sure to visit Abisko National Park. The clear skies here make it one of the best spots for viewing the Northern Lights.
