7 Best Things To Do In Sweden

Sweden is the largest country in Northern Europe. Forest covers two-thirds of the land area, moose roam the woods, and one of their most famous 15th-century kings became a pirate!

As if all of that isn’t enough to make you want to visit this Scandinavian nation, here are 7 fun things to do in Sweden.

7 Top Things To Do In Sweden

Roam Where You Want To

The Swedes believe in Allemansrätten, which is the freedom to roam, well, anywhere. If you’re a nature lover or a keen hiker or camper, you’ll love this as much as we did.

One of the top things to do in Sweden is hiking. Go hiking in the forests, picking wild berries, or camping wherever you please (although not in private gardens, we don’t advise that!).

You won’t have to pay for accessing nature trails or setting up a tent. And every one of Sweden’s 100,000 lakes is open for you to go swimming in. It’s one of the best things to do in Sweden in Summer. And women traveling solo will be happy to know that Sweden is one of the safest countries to visit.

Cycle Along The Göta Canal

Cycling is a big deal in Sweden, as in many European countries. They have excellent infrastructure for it, and with such beautiful scenery, we couldn't pass up the opportunity for a bit of vacation biking.

There are several places where you can rent a bike for an hour or two, or even for the day. We recommend cycling the towpaths of the Göta Canal. Stop for a breather and watch the historic canal boats sail on by.

Cruise The Archipelago

With so many great things to see and do in Sweden, it truly deserves its title as the Nordic gem of Scandinavia. The Stockholm archipelago is made up of thousands of islands. Okay, some of them are pretty small, but that doesn’t make them any less exciting, and we found that an archipelago cruise of the region made a fun day trip.

Choose between a leisurely ride on a passenger ferry or a shorter and more private excursion on a zippy motor boat. Or charter a boat and go sightseeing at your own pace.

Stand In Awe Of The Aurora Borealis

The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights as they’re also known, are an amazing sight to behold. More frequently seen in March and September, they’re the result of electrically charged solar particles colliding in the sky.

But we weren’t too concerned with the science of it. Because the sheer beauty of this richly-hued display took our breath away.

We know you’ll adore this natural light show in Arctic Europe, too. So be sure to visit Abisko National Park. The clear skies here make it one of the best spots for viewing the Northern Lights.

Visit Europe’s Oldest National Park

Are you looking for a national park that is truly a glimpse into the wild? Sarek National Park, in the Lapland area of Northern Sweden, is the oldest national park in Europe. It’s filled with soaring mountains, icy glaciers, and deep valleys.

There are several suspension bridges along the outskirts of the park, where we had the most incredible views. Make it a trip to remember and stay over at one of the mountain cabins.

Explore Historic Castles

There are more than 220 castles, and several castle ruins, throughout Sweden. Some of these structures are remarkably well preserved, and attract throngs of visitors. Our favorite was Skokloster castle, an impressive example of Baroque architecture with beautifully manicured gardens.

There are thousands of objects on display for visitors to see, including ceramics, silverware, and artworks. But we particularly loved the portrait gallery and the magnificent weapons collection.

Learn To Ski

The Swedish mountain slopes provide a perfect setting for skiing and other snowy sports. So if you have never learned to ski, Sweden is the place to do it.

Hemavan and Högfjället are two of the best ski resorts for novices to this winter sport. One of the best things about skiing is that your instructor can ski alongside you, helping you every step of the way.

And we found the locals far more laid-back in their skiing and coaching style than the Swiss.

Explore Sweden

Sweden is the ultimate vacation destination for nature lovers and outdoors enthusiasts. And whether you prefer your sports on land or water, in the sun or on the snow, you’ll find the perfect adventure waiting for you.
