7 Best Things To Do In Austria
Tour A Historical Palace
With so many castles, fortresses, and palaces around you’ll want to see them all, but if you have limited time, be sure to visit the Schönbrunn Palace. This palace was once the summer residence of the Habsburg rulers and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
It’s one of Vienna’s most popular tourist attractions, and our guided tour here was certainly one of the highlights of our stay in Vienna. But a self-guided audio tour was also on offer with commentary available in multiple languages.
Feast On The Best Apple Strudel In The World
Calling all foodie travelers! Vienna is said to be the birthplace of the traditional apple strudel recipe. And you won’t have to go far to enjoy this traditional delicacy. Almost every dining establishment in the country has its version of it.
But we particularly enjoyed our slice of pastry heaven at the Kaffee Alt Wien. The ambiance of this charmingly retro cafe enhanced the overall experience. The coffee was great too, but that came as no surprise. Austria has an illustrious and well-established coffee culture.
Go Snowboarding In Tirol
Snowboarding is the most popular sport in Austria, even more popular than skiing. But it has the most ski resorts of any European country. And you’ll find plenty of excellent snowboarding locations, too.
Our favorite was St. Anton in Tirol, which is great for both these winter sports. The St. Anton Freestyle Park caters to all snowboarding skill levels. If you’ve never tried snowboarding before, you’ll want to try it here.
Hike In The Mountains
With some of the most beautiful natural scenery in Europe, you’ll want to spend most of your time outdoors. So get some exercise and see the sights at the same time with a hike in the mountains.
We navigated the hills and dales safely by going on a guided mountain hike. It’s your best option for trekking through unfamiliar Austrian territory.
If you’d prefer to see some medieval landmarks along the way, the Castle of Hardegg Trail in Thayatal National Park won’t disappoint. We got some beautiful souvenirs in the park’s gift shop, which sells everything from arts and crafts to photographic books and outdoor gardening tools.
They also had a great restaurant and even a bike rental kiosk for our sightseeing pleasure.
