When a strong wind blows directly perpendicular to an aircraft during landing, things can get hairy pretty quickly.
Imagine if you will, the plane is a quarterback rushing to the end zone when a defensive lineman slams into him from the side. This is roughly the same effect a plane withstands during crosswinds, only the wind is bigger, meaner and stronger than any defensive lineman.
Pilots are trained to compensate for crosswinds but every so often one comes along that really packs a wallop.

Take, for example, an Emirates A380 landing at Dusseldorf Airport earlier this week. The landing started out normally enough, but just after touching down a massive crosswind really put the pilot to the test.
Captured on video by a Cargospotter YouTube Channel, the footage captures the dramatic landing.
"I have filmed a few thousand crosswind landings at several airports in Europe within the past years, but this Airbus A380 crosswind landing was extremely hard and extraordinary," wrote Cargospotter on its YouTube Channel. "At first it looked like a pretty normal crosswind approach but after touchdown, the pilots tried to align with the runway which looked pretty incredible."
"I have never seen such a tremendous reaction of an airplane after a touchdown. You can see that the pilots tried to align with the runway by using the tail rudder and luckily it worked out."
"This video shows the incredible skills of the pilots. Even after an unexpected wind gust after touchdown, they managed to re-align with the runway. Incredible job by the pilots!!"

I think we can all agree with the Cargospotter channel when it writes, "I would really like to know what the passengers thought during the arrival today at Düsseldorf."
