As amateur astronomers around the United States prepare for the total eclipse on August 21, Princess Cruises will be throwing special viewing parties on six ships in Alaska as part of the line's Stargazing with Discovery at Sea program.
An estimated 18,000 passengers sailing on the Coral Princess, Emerald Princess, Grand Princess, Island Princess, Ruby Princess and Star Princess will have the opportunity to witness a 54 percent view of the eclipse using specially-designed glasses for protection.
The festivities are part of the Stargazing with Discovery at Sea program, which is led by Discovery at Sea Science Channel ambassador Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi. The program was created to enable crew members to lead cosmic voyages from the ship's top deck for families of all ages.
"Through our exclusive partnership with Discovery Communications, we're able to offer expert tips and background from Science Channel experts that provide intriguing commentary around this rare phenomenon and for the ultimate viewing party onboard," Princess Cruises vice president Denise Saviss said in a statement.

During the eclipse and subsequent stargazing events, passengers will receive branded posters, take part in solar projector building projects and even enjoy specialty Eclipse Cookies.
The partnership between Princess Cruises and Discovery started in 2015 with the Discovery at Sea program, which offers memorable cruise vacation experiences for the whole family based on the brand's programming.
Since its inception, the program has expanded to feature various activities, including stargazing, exclusive Discovery and Animal Planet shore excursions and Camp Discovery Youth & Teen Centers.
