Icy weather across the Northeast U.S. led to several accidents on Sunday, including four fatal crashes.
According to FoxNews.com, a pile up involving 30 to 50 vehicles on Interstate 76 outside of Philadelphia left one person dead, while another accident killed two people on nearby Interstate 476.
Two others died in separate incidents in northeastern Pennsylvania and New Haven, Connecticut, where slippery conditions were determined to be a major factor.
The hazardous conditions were caused by light rain falling onto cold roads, creating a sheet of ice.
"This is the worst type of winter precipitation to combat, because it can freeze instantly and it doesn't need to be the whole pavement for vehicles crossing it to have problems," said Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman Eugene Blaum.
New York native Kaitlyn Maier told the Associated Press that she had no control of her vehicle despite driving less than 10 mph.
A plethora of accidents caused by the icy conditions led to closures on major highways in New Hampshire.
While the combination of moisture and cold surfaces will remain a concern for parts of the region on Monday morning, rising temperatures should bring some relief to places later in the day.
For now, travelers in the Northeast should proceed with extreme caution.
