The Ministry of Tourism Malaysia officially introduced the "Tanglung Tourism Festival 2010," in recognition of the traditionally held spirit of Guanxi. Guanxi is an ancient practice held amongst Malaysians, which is parallel with the government's 1Malaysia concept. For Malaysians of Chinese decent, Guanxi describes the process of social interaction and the importance of success in any relationship. It is a necessary component in building bridges and harmonious living among Malaysia's multi-cultural and diverse ethnic groups.
Held for the second consecutive year, the "Tanglung Tourism Festival 2010" is enjoyed by both locals and international tourists. The "Tanglung Tourism Festival 2010" commenced with a procession of colorful lanterns. Visitors saw the Chinese stage play on the Legend of Houyi and Chang'er. It also featured a "Cuti-Cuti 1Malaysia" performance, which is a performance that combines various cultural dance elements unique to Malaysia.
"Malaysia's festivals symbolize and reiterate our people's unique position in respecting and sharing the beauty and joy of our cultural diversity," said the Minister of Tourism Dato' Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen. She added that the Ministry will continue to support tourism industry players and other stakeholders in promoting all aspects of cultural and religious tourism.
Lantern or "tanglung" festivals are also known throughout other parts of the world as the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is celebrated on the 15th day in the eight month of the Chinese Lunar calendar. A signature pastry known as the mooncake is traditionally prepared by the Chinese specifically for this occasion.
