Carlos Joaquin Gonzalez, the governor of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, which includes the popular tourist destinations of Cancun and the Riviera Maya, revealed a new travel app for visitors to the state at the Tianguis Turistico tourism conference, which took place in Mazatlan, Mexico, from April 15-18, 2018.

Guest Assist provides 24-hour tourist help to visitors in case there is a conflict or some other complicated situation while they are visiting Quintana Roo. For example, if there is a theft, an accident or any situation that may affect travelers or their belongings, the app can provide guidance on how to proceed with trained staff available around the clock who speak a variety of different languages.

"This is a tourist assistance tech platform, and we're very pleased to be able to launch this particular platform in Quintana Roo, but it will also be available at a later date for use by other destinations in Mexico. The goal is to offer a safety net for tourists, that's one of the main points of the state's agenda," said Gonzalez.

"We need to offer them a guarantee that they can come here to relax and that they can be certain of returning safely to their homes, this is key to our tourism offer," he added.

As the region expands with an expected 7,000 rooms that are currently under construction and more in the development phase, the new app will be able to assist an influx of visitors expected in the region.

Offering visitors a feeling of security when traveling to Mexico is one of the country's key priorities. It has already taken steps to increase surveillance and police presence at maritime terminals.

There has also been an increased investment in technology to assist with communication between security personnel and hotels and tour operators.

The new Guest Assist app will take this a step further and put visitors in close communications with representatives that can help them resolve issues.

Travel agents looking to learn how to confidently address client questions regarding safety in Mexico can enroll in the recently-launched Visit Mexico University digital training and resource center
