A marriage proposal at one of the more "classic" venues in the world like the "Locks of Love" bridge in Paris is always a good idea, but a bit passé.
In a world studded with over 193 countries and counting, there are unexplored islands and nooks and crannies that carry much beauty and grandeur, and some are quite under-the-radar.
Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India
This Indian archipelago is pearl necklace of 300 islands known for their palm-lined, eggshell-colored beaches as well as Aboriginal tribes protected by a Government regulation amended in 1956. These relatively raw islands are quite undeveloped, with many only reachable by skiffs. Their beautiful coral reefs make diving here a true pleasure. While luxury lodging is only now beginning to hit these islands, there are several boutique hotels and beach resorts that are lush, leafy and affordable.
Aruba
This sliver of an island, which is only 75-square-miles has a lot to offer romantics, particularly on the beach and hotel front. The silky Eagle Beach is home to so many high-end resorts and hotels including the Ritz-Carlton, the last hotel to open there in 2014. A good way to explore the island is to rent ATVs and take in the windward and leeward sides of the island, and the majestic backdrop of the rugged Arikok National Park, which is an ideal place for a marriage proposal.

The Big Island, Hawaii
This island is so enormous that it has 13 different climate zones, from desert to tropical rainforest. One of the most wonderful ways to start the journey here is to fly into Kona, which has a mile-long coffee road studded with coffee farms. On the quieter side, on Ka'U, where the sugarcane plantations were, is a beautiful old plantation called the Pahala Plantation, which is a romantic bed & breakfast, and the lush grounds provide a great backdrop for a proposal.
Lisbon, Portugal
This hilly city, with its several cafes playing soulful Fado music and an array of tin-glazed azulejos-tiled promenades, is so charming that a proposal on any corner will look and feel magical. One place that is often overlooked in Portugal is the Moorish Alfama District, which is the birthplace of Fado music and one which even has a Fado museum. Its steep hills, alleys, and gorgeous quaint shops and vintage trams make this a real romantic destination.
Vail, Colorado
A walkable town for all seasons, this Colorado ski resort has beautiful hotels like the Four Seasons and the Solaris, as well as a growing craft beer scene. During the summer, the city comes alive with the sounds of the Bravo! Music Festival, with internationally-renowned orchestras like the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields who come and grace the stage of the Gerald Ford Auditorium which has a lovely garden and children's garden too. Plus, the many hiking trails studded with wildflowers are a beautiful way to propose and get an ideal vantage point of the town.
