San Salvador is a growing city in the country of El Salvador that is known for its volcanos, beautiful scenery, treasured memorials and, of course, its pupusas, which resemble big tortillas but are so much more.

Here are seven things to do while you visit this amazing city:

Move on up: If you've ever said to yourself that you want to hike a volcano, San Salvador is the place to do it. First, head on over to Parque Nacional el Boquerón, where there is a crater that is just shy of 5,000 feet wide and 5,905 feet above sea level. Then, a little more than an hour away, if you're up for the challenge, is the Izalco Volcano. Also known as El Salvador's Lighthouse of the Pacific, the extreme hiker can charge to the top of this young volcano on its steep slopes and enjoy the gorgeous views from the top.

Say a prayer: Looking for something a little more subdued, but just as beautiful? The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador (otherwise known as the Catedral Metropolitana de San Salvador), is a large part of El Salvadoran history as a site of deadly massacres dating back to the country's civil war. It has also been visited twice by Pope John Paul II, who knelt by the Cathedral's Tomb of Archbishop Oscar Romero.

Because Fútbol: Are you ready for some Fútbol? Because in San Salvador, it's the sport of choice. You must be part of the crowds at the Estadio Mágico González arena, which in 2006 had its named changed to the Estadio Nacional Jorge "Mágico" González, after their most popular player.

Comer mucho: What that means is to eat a lot in San Salvador, because there are a lot of native foods to try. Number one on your list should be the pupusas, which are made of corn and stuffed with a variety of fixings, including cheese, beef and rice.

Touch the Monument to Truth and Memory: San Salvador is filled with so much history of its civil war battles and the lives lost, and this wall is a must-see. It's carved with the names of the 75,000 Salvadoran civilians who lost their lives in The Salvadoran Civil War, which lasted from 1980 to 1992. Run your fingers over the more than 25,000 names or stand there and admire it, but you will definitely feel the emotion from it.

Enjoy the Teatro Nacional De San Salvador: See a show, concert or festival at this beautiful venue. As a local institution, it serves and promotes the arts of scenic companies of the Secretariat of Culture of the Presidency, as well as independent groups, both national and international.

Let the kids play: If the kids are trekking along with you on this amazing vacation, take them to a place that's just for them. The Tin Marin Museum for Children is a hands-on, interactive venue that lets the kids be whatever their imagination lets them be. There is also a Planetarium, exhibits and programs to choose from.
