The results of the latest travelhorizons study, released this week, reveal that travel intentions among American adults remain robust more than halfway through 2015.
Sixty-one percent of the more than 2,300 U.S. adults surveyed last month said they plan to take at least one overnight leisure trip within the next six months. That figure remains relatively unchanged from the same period last year, but is encouraging nonetheless.
The Travelers Sentiment Index, which stands at 111 - three points above where it did this time in 2014 - shows that the perceived affordability of travel (169), personal finances available for travel (115) and interest in travel (106) have each increased since July 2014, while time available for travel (106), quality of service (114) and the perceived safety of travel (95) remain unchanged for the most part.
The perceived affordability of travel was by far the biggest riser over the past year, soaring 38 points.
The TSI also revealed that satisfaction with cruising (146) has risen 14 points to the highest level recorded since the travelhorizons survey was first launched in 2007.
Satisfaction with airlines (114) rose eight points compared to the same period last year, while satisfaction with lodging (126) and rental car (124) companies each increased by six points.
The survey also shows that more American travelers intend to take a trip by themselves, with that figure rising from 23 percent in 2014 to 25 percent in 2015. What's more, those solo vacations were found to be most popular among millennial travelers, with 37 percent saying they intended to take a solo trip in the near future.
A majority of those solo travelers, 56 percent, will be visiting the U.S., the study found. Meanwhile, 18 percent said they plan to travel alone abroad.
As far as business travel intentions are concerned, the survey results show that nearly one in three Americans (28 percent) intend to take at least one overnight business trip during the next six months. That figure is unchanged from July 2014. However those traveling for business are anticipating more trips than last year, with the average climbing to 3.4 trips from 2.7 during the same period last year.
The national travelhorizons survey is conducted quarterly by marketing communications firm MMGY Global, which specializes in the travel and hospitality industries, among others.
