TravelPulse founder Mark Murphy was on Fox Business' Money with Melissa Francis on Jan. 10, part of a panel of travel experts that included travel consultant Cecile Raubenheimer and Barrons Senior Editor Jack Hough.
The topics of the day included hot new travel destinations, but before that the panel reviewed some of the latest travel gadgets. Innovation isn't always pretty, and the panel was quick to lambast a few of these new advancements in travel technology that, to put it kindly, could use a little retooling.
First up was the Micro Kickboard luggage scooter, essentially a rolling suitcase that some enterprising adventure had strapped a Razor scooter onto. Murphy wasn't impressed, saying "It's not a good scooter and it's not a good bag, so I think you're a double loser on this deal."
Next up was the Wearable Sleeping Bag, which is pretty much what you think it is. Murphy was able to demonstrate his snarky sense of humor by commenting, "Last time I went to Mars I wore it, and it was great. Because it's really cold on the red planet. So I suggest on your next trip to Mars you give it a shot."
He had similarly hilarious reservations about the B-Tourist, a decidedly awkward advancement in travel privacy. Essentially, the Tourist Strap is a large elastic band you strap between the seat in front of you and your own headrest to let fellow travelers know you dislike conversation and spending your money wisely.
"You know what this is? This is the human slingshot," Murphy commented.
It wasn't all questionable travel technology advancements, though, as Willis then asked panelists to discuss up-and-coming vacation destinations. Raubenheimer talked up the possibilities of Poland and Iceland, with Hough echoing her comments on Poland.
Murphy was able to shed some light on Anglesey, a Welsh island that's causing a stir in travel, saying, "Wales is a great destination. I've visited there several times; beautiful greenery. So I definitely suggest Wales as a whole, tied into an overall UK trip, and get out to that island"
Our founder also discussed a region that has made huge strides in terms of tourism impact lately, namely Southeast Asia.
"Southeast Asia is hot; Vietnam in particular," he said, mentioning Myanmar, Burma and Cambodia is up and comers in the area. "River cruises are very hot there. Check that out because the experience is incredible."
