Los Cabos has always been a glamorous destination, a place regularly associated in the headlines with celebrities jetting off for exclusive getaways at luxe retreats that we'd all love to visit ourselves, or at least get a closer look at.
As if its glam factor wasn't already securely intact, Los Cabos is now ushering in an exciting wave of hotels and resorts that represent a new era of style, sophistication, and sleek, thoughtful design.
These properties, many of which have opened over the past year, and others poised to open in the months ahead or in 2019 and beyond, showcase futuristic design, massive curated art collections, spas complete with Himalayan Salt Caves, notable nods to the environment and sustainability; and family touches that have not yet been seen before in the destination.
Here are five of the most exciting properties, showcased to the press during a recent VIP Summit.
Solaz, A Luxury Collection Resort, Los Cabos
A property that's home to more than 400 pieces of curated art and its own onsite museum detailing the history of the Baja region, Solaz is simply stunning.
That wow factor starts in the lobby. Banish thoughts of a staid, old-fashioned lobby immediately. Here guests are greeted not by someone sitting behind a desk, but by a sweeping open space showcasing the Sea of Cortez in all of its sparkling glory.
Once you manage to peel your eyes away from the expansive ocean view, take a look around the lobby because it's filled with eclectic pieces of art ranging from driftwood furniture to avant-garde sculpture. On the wall, you'll find the property's masterpiece - a massive turquoise and gold mural representing cave paintings found in the region.
Solaz's art collection was curated by none other than Cesar Lopez Negrete, the famed Mexican artist who spent years traveling throughout Baja studying the region's land, water, history, and folklore.
"The main pillars of the resort are art, architecture, and artisans," Ricardo Iriarte, the property's communications and public relations manager, explained during a walk-through.
Those pillars come to life not only via the impressive art collection but also via the hotel concierge who's charged with creating each guest's special experiences during a visit, said Iriarte. Options range from private walking tours to discuss the property's artwork to special gym classes.
Solaz's design is aimed at paying tribute to Baja and its natural landscape, which also means you will not find any palm trees here because they're not native. Instead, guests are treated to landscaping featuring giant Saguaro cactuses that are between 450 and 600 years old and ooze character.
"The hotel wants to give Baja a voice," Iriarte noted.
The 128-room property, which opened in early September after three years of construction, also features an impressively stocked wine cave (more than 2,500 vintages including many local options), and five pools, including two Olympic-size infinity pools overlooking the Sea of Cortez. Yes, there it is again, another stunning ocean view.
The resort also deserves kudos for its many sustainable and eco-friendly elements, including an on-site desalinization plant that provides water. Many of its buildings, meanwhile, are covered in green, living rooftops, which have all sorts of benefits ranging from reducing runoff to sequestering carbon and providing habitats for wildlife.
One last insider tip, be sure to set aside plenty of time for the 10,000-square-foot Ojo de Liebre Spa, which includes a unique Himalayan Salt Cave designed to improve your health and mood. (Just in case the entire, stunning, art-filled property itself isn't enough to improve your mood.)
Le Blanc Spa Resort Los Cabos
Let's just start with the aromatherapy here shall, we? From the moment one walks into Le Blanc Spa Resort Los Cabos, a property awash in floor-to-ceiling windows and striking white decor with gold accents, you are greeted by the…scent.
While this may seem like a small, almost irrelevant detail, over the course of a stay here it becomes a key feature and a treat as you stroll through the resort's spaces greeted by subtle, relaxing scents of cucumber, citrus, lavender and more. And it's not just the public spaces, do yourself a favor and download the Le Blanc app upon arrival and then use it to arrange for some of this wonderful, bliss-inducing aromatherapy for your guest room. Go crazy and arrange for a new scent every day. It's your vacation after all.
The other all-important feature about Le Blanc - its food is outstanding. I made a beeline for Ocean, its seaside dining experience, upon my arrival and from that point forward made sure to eat at least one meal a day at this inviting venue surrounded by beach and ocean views (thus the name). On the menu were all forms of ceviche, and a variety of elegant and thoughtfully prepared seafood dishes.
Among the many other restaurants at this all-inclusive, adults-only resort is Blanc Asia, which features Asian fusion cuisine that's so good I ate here two nights in a row. Blanc International is the resort's buffet venue. There's also Blanc Italia, an upscale, a la carte dining experience, and Blanc Pizza for specialty pizzas and salads. Lumiere meanwhile, is the property's nod to elegant French dining and Mezze offers Lebanese cuisine.
One more note about that handy Le Blanc app you should be sure to download. In addition to scheduling in-room aromatherapy, it can be used to arrange for such happy, pampering details as handcrafted soaps, custom pillows and even a bath experience with custom bath salts. You will be hard pressed to go home after a few days of living like this.
Montage Los Cabos
Calling all spa lovers, two of the most memorable features about this exclusive, tucked-away property are the massive spa and the beach, where you can actually swim in the water, which is not the case with all properties in Los Cabos unfortunately.
The property's intimate, secluded setting on Santa Maria Bay is home to one of the finest beaches for swimming and snorkeling in all of Los Cabos.
Newly opened at the end of May, Montage features 122 rooms on 39 acres. There are also 52 residences on the property.
But let's get back to that spa. At 40,000 square feet, and with 12 treatment rooms, as well as a 25-meter adults-only pool with eight private cabanas, Spa Montage is an escape within an escape.
Another nice touch at Montage, all of the guest rooms have outdoor showers. That's right, all of them, not just the suites. The resort also includes four unique dining concepts, three distinct pool experiences and a Paintbox children's program.
And don't miss dining at the resort's signature restaurant, Mezcal, a modern Mexican kitchen featuring reimagined interpretations of ancestral culinary traditions, serving breakfast and dinner by Executive Chef Alexis Palacios.
Viceroy Los Cabos
Think minimalist meets uber-sheik and you'll be on the right track when imagining Viceroy. The property is also Instagram gold.
The striking hotel is the latest addition to The Viceroy Icon Collection and includes 191 rooms and 50 residences.
Originally concepted by Mexico-based architect, Miguel Angel Aragones, and formally known as Mar Adentro, the Viceroy has reemerged after undergoing renovations and enhancements.
The new design is described as a dreamscape that embraces "the natural beauty of water throughout every facet and a place that provides a canvas for discovery with cinematic views." That grand language is no overstatement. Viceroy appears to be the ideal backdrop for glamorous seaside experiences appropriate for the most stylish of jet-setters.
That vibe begins upon arrival. Guests enter through the hotel's sculpted iron portal and artisan wooden door, which reveals a space that's part lobby, part posh lounge, overlooking the ocean.
Viceroy includes various reconceptualized and brand-new elements among them a beachfront pool and bar, the refreshed arrival area, new dining venues, and a state-of-the-art fitness center curated by Los Angeles-based celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak.
With all of its high-design, Viceroy surprisingly, won't cost you a fortune. It's priced to be competitive, with rooms starting at $300 to $600 per night.
"We're trying to be aggressive from a rate perspective because we are more of an urban resort," said Martin Kipping, the property's general manager.
Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Los Cabos
Family travelers take note, this resort is squarely aimed at you, in the most glamorous, Cabo fashion of course.
While there are many wonderful features about this property including the drool-worthy rooftop infinity pool, (the only one in the destination), the most striking for me was the guest room design.
Accommodations here are created to make family vacationing incredibly easy and to that end, rooms include a washer and dryer; dishwasher, stove and a dining table big enough to accommodate a sit-down family meal. In other words, you can comfortably live in these accommodations as a family. Insert a giant, relaxing exhale right here.
A property that aims to redefine the luxury experience (bravo from family travelers everywhere), Garza Blanca is multi-generation friendly while also being stylish, and chic at every turn, which is no small accomplishment.
"Properties are either lifestyle or family oriented. We wanted to mix the two because nowadays the modern traveler wants a lifestyle experience that they can bring their family to," Jairo Torres, director of sales and marketing at Garza Blanca, told me.
The property will offer Junior Suites; One Bedroom Suites; Two Bedroom Suites and also Limited Edition Luxury Residences. Some of the additional, notable highlights tied to these accommodations include hammocks on balconies and at the Limited Edition Luxury Residences, there are outdoor hot tubs and expansive terraces.
A few more important details - there will be three onsite gourmet restaurants and eight pools, including that infinity pool to die for. The soft opening is planned for December 15.
