One of the Caribbean's smallest destinations is gaining a new major resort. Wyndham Hotel Group will break ground on the Wyndham Grand Nevis, a $160 million beachfront property, in mid-2017 said government officials. The resort's first phase is expected to open in 2019, adding a rare brand name to the dual-island nation's accommodations inventory.
The new resort will be located within Northern Pointe Resort, a 30-acre luxury real estate development currently under construction on Long Haul Bay in St. James' Parish. The project first phase is scheduled for completion in 2019 and will feature 170 suites, condominiums and villas in sizes ranging between 900 and 5,100 square feet.
The Wyndham Grand Nevis will also feature a private beach club, five dining areas, infinity pools, a spa and more than 10,000 square feet of meeting space.
"The Nevis government is delighted with the announcement from Wyndham Hotels of its expansion into Nevis," said Mark Brantley, Nevis' minister of tourism. "This is fantastic news for tourism on the island that we can attract another international brand to complement our bespoke plantation inns and the Four Seasons Nevis," he said.
St. Kitts and Nevis is one of the Caribbean's smallest destinations. Of the 28 destinations tracked by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) in 2014, the last year for which the government issued arrivals data, only Montserrat and St. Vincent and the Grenadines recorded fewer land-based visitors than St. Kitts and Nevis' 104,730.
The island's ties to Alexander Hamilton, who was born in Nevis have provided the destination with additional visibility due to the success of the hit Broadway play "Hamilton." Founder of the U.S. Mint and the nation's financial system, Hamilton's Nevis birthplace is an island landmark.
