Valentine's Day has passed, but every couple can use a romantic getaway no matter what day it is on the calendar. Lovebirds looking for some alone time should start planning their trip by picking the right destination and surprising a loved one with a romantic escape.
Madrid, Spain is a great getaway destination. It's home to one of the most beautiful temples, Templo de Debod, as well as parks to stroll hand in hand or enjoy a picnic, such as Parque El Capricho. The 18th-century gardens and their fountains, grottos and ponds make it a perfect backdrop for memorable photos.
Of course, a getaway is nothing without a romantic hotel that you and your honey can cuddle up in when you're done with sightseeing.
In Madrid, that hotel is Barcelo Emperatriz, located in the heart of the city in the upscale Salamanca district.
The newly renovated hotel opened in 2016 and is located directly across from a park. It's decorated with warm and cozy intimate lighting and fresh flowers, decorative touches that were inspired by an empress of the 19th-century and the wife of Napoleon III, Eugénie de Montijo. She entertained guests and accompanied the Emperor to balls, opera and theater, and was also a strong supporter and advocate of equality for women.
Couples can relax in one of 146 luxurious rooms that are decorated in a neoclassical style with a combination of avant-garde and classic furniture, and a comfortable bed that is covered in 300-thread count cotton sheets. The bathrooms are beautifully decorated and include modern Laufen washbasins.

The pampering continues in the completely relaxing rainfall shower. In the Emperatriz Premium Room, guests can enjoy an in-room whirlpool tub where the twosome can reconnect and rejuvenate.
The hotel features other amenities that the lovely duo can enjoy as well, including free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and Nespresso machines. The suites have lounges so you can order from the 24-hour available room service.
If the two of you eventually want to leave the room, the romance can continue over drinks at the Eugenie bar or dinner at the hotel's Mutis restaurant, where you can dine on such delectable dishes as fillet of beef with noodles and top it off with Madagascar vanilla ice cream for dessert. The hotel includes a buffet breakfast and a select menu that includes the daily Barceló Healthy Gourmet menu, which are dishes that combine the fine dining with healthy eating. The hotel's afternoon tea includes traditional fresh churros, which are delicious strips of fried dough with sugar that are typical of Madrid.
Take time to enjoy the view of the stars or of the city while you sit atop the hotel's skyview terrace.
A romantic getaway wouldn't be complete without touring some of the area's most popular sites that are near the hotel, such as the Puerta del Sol, the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, the Puerta de Alcalá, the American Embassy and the famous Retiro Park. These make great photo opportunities that you'll look back on forever.
