Hundreds of outraged travelers have accused an Indiana travel agent of fraud, according to an exclusive report by CBS 2 Chicago's Dorothy Tucker.
Travel agent Nicole Scott, of Chesterton, Ind., is under fire from a plethora of customers who claim she scammed them out thousands of dollars in some cases. Many of the victims say that they had a difficult time contacting Scott after paying for their trip and when they did hear back from her, whether by phone or email, it was usually to relay bad news about their trip.
One of the victims, Cristina Aguirre, even created a Facebook page called "Victims of Nicole Scott Sunbound Travels" to help get the word out.
"We probably have a list of well over 300 victims," said Chesterton Police Chief David Cincoski via Tucker. "We are finding through some of our investigations that on many occasions, clients would reserve a trip, provide a credit card number and then that credit card number would be used to pay for someone else's trip entirely different."
So far, more than 80 people have filed complaints against Scott with the local police department.
Tour operator Apple Vacations has also filed a police report accusing Scott of falsifying documents. The operator claims it suffered losses in excess of $35,000 as a result.
Meanwhile, the Indiana and Illinois attorneys general are investigating Scott on accusations of fraud upon receiving numerous complaints.
"I'd like to see her prosecuted because she needs to understand the depth of what she's done you know, the depth of the loss for so many people," said Rosemarie Murphy-Gordon, who paid Scott more than $3,000 for a family vacation that never happened.
Tucker reported that Scott was unavailable to talk at her home or by phone.
