On Tuesday, a plane landing in Indonesia slammed into the runway and skidded for almost one mile after the aircraft's landing gear was ripped off.
According to CNN.com, the Trigana Air Service plane was attempting to land at Wamena Airport in West Papua, Indonesia, at 7:30 a.m. local time. A pilot witnessed the incident and claims the aircraft touched down too hard and collapsed the landing gear.
As a result, the Trigana Air Service airplane lost its left landing gear and went into a slide that took it almost a mile down the runway before it skidded off into the grass. Witnesses claim there was debris all over the runway and surrounding area.
Video and images from the accident were shared on Twitter:
The pilot, co-pilot and technician onboard at the time managed to escape without injuries, but it took longer than expected for crews to remove the plane from the grass next to the runway.
Similar crashes are common at the airport for several reasons. In addition to the airport being surrounded by high mountains and cloud cover, there is no instrument landing equipment at the facility, forcing pilots to land visually.
