AIG Travel is celebrating Pride Month this June with the launch of a travel safety education initiative tailored to the LGBTQ community.
The travel insurance and global assistance services provider partnered with LGBTQ advocacy group ManAboutWorld to develop a comprehensive online guide featuring advice, tools and resources for LGBTQ travelers.
The downloadable guide is available at aig.com/travel/lgbtq and aims to help travelers successfully navigate the security and safety challenges that may arise during travel for leisure or business, especially in destinations where the LGBTQ community is marginalized or even criminalized.
The tips address a variety of topics, including the importance of thoroughly researching a destination ahead of time, traveling with children, public displays of affection or PDA and transgender travelers.
The guide also includes a collection of the most reliable and current online resources.
"AIG Travel recognized the need for greater understanding and awareness regarding safety for LGBTQ travelers and we took steps to ensure this community didn't feel deterred from traveling due to the potential added risks," said AIG Travel CEO Jeff Rutledge in a statement. "Our educational outreach initiative recommends safety measures and provides advice to help ensure LGBTQ individuals can travel with confidence."
According to the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, homosexuality is illegal in 72 countries around the world. Bermuda was the latest to legalize same-sex marriage.
AIG Travel's latest LGBTQ initiative comes on the heels of a similar safety awareness campaign designed to empower female travelers.
