Ritz Tours introduced a nine-day Best of U.K. program priced from $1,299 per person double occupancy, including four-star hotel accommodations. Rates are land only and departures are available April 25 and May 16. The program begins with a full-day city tour of London, including visits to the Tower of London, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace -- each offering first-hand insight into the country's rich, historic past. The following day brings the group to Cambridge, home to the famous university. From there, the group travels to York, in northeast England, for a city orientation tour. The next day the group departs for Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, where they will enjoy a sightseeing excursion which includes entrance to the Edinburgh Castle.
The tour offers a free day of leisure in Edinburgh. Travelers can walk up and down Princes Street where they can visit the wonderful shops or stroll about the Old Town and the 18th century New Town. Others may choose to visit the famous Forth Bridge, an amazing piece of civil engineering dating from 1890, while art enthusiasts can explore the Scottish National Gallery or the National Museum to view classic paintings and historical artifacts. From Edinburgh, the group visits the famous Lake District in northwest England. A sightseeing tour reveals the wonderful scenery of lakes and hills. Among those who enjoyed the English Lake District include poet William Wordsworth, and Beatrix Potter -- author of the famous "Peter Rabbit" stories. The tour heads south to Stratford-Upon-Avon, in Warwickshire, the heart of Shakespeare country. The group visits Shakespeare's birthplace in the center of Stratford, and actress Anne Hathaway's cottage in a tiny village outside of town. Afterwards, the group tours the small college town of Oxford, where Chelsea Clinton and Britain's Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher were once students and Lewis Carroll, author of "Alice in Wonderland," once taught mathematics.
Highlights of the final day include a sightseeing tour of the ancient city of Bath, with a visit to the famous Roman Bath. In the afternoon, the group drives to Stonehenge, the fascinating stone circle built 5,000 years ago by the pre-Indo-European inhabitants of the British Isles. The tour concludes with an overnight stay in London. Priced from $1,299 per person double occupancy, the Best of U.K. program features accommodations in four-star hotels; air-conditioned motor coach transportation; meals and entertainment per the itinerary; and the services of knowledgeable tour guides.
