This is pretty much every road trippers aspiration, to find a quirky/fun roadside attraction while on the road. They make for great photo ops, and often lead to great road trip stories to share with friends.
We've come across some fun, and even some strange roadside attractions while out on the road. Today we share a list of our favorite roadside attractions:
Inukshuk
We found this Inukshuk along Highway 1 outside Golden, BC while on a road trip to Alberta. There seems to be no information online about this Inukshuk, or why Golden is referred to as Canada's G Spot, so this makes for a mysterious and funny roadside attraction.
Phallic Rock
Just outside Carefree, AZ is this funny/natural rock formation. The town of Carefree is well known for having the world's largest sundial, but that's not the roadside attraction that drives many tourists to the town.
The London Bridge
This was a very cool roadside attraction found in Lake Havasu City, AZ.
The story behind this roadside attraction: this is the actual London Bridge, built in 1831 and straight from Great Britain. A resident of Lake Havasu City invested well over $7 million to have this bridge shipped over from London and reassembled in Lake Havasu City during the '70s when London was upgrading its roads. The bridge still has all the markings and signs from when it was in London, and even flies British flags.
Hobo Joe
The Hobo Joe Statue in Buckeye, AZ remains one of our favorite roadside attractions to date, partly because it's unusual and partly because we had such a hard time finding it. It took us two separate road trips before we finally found this statue.
Fremont Troll
This impressive two-story troll can be found under a bridge near the university in Seattle, WA. It was created as an art project, and like many roadside attractions, it's great for fun travel pictures.
Cadillac Ranch
This is a great roadside attraction for those who like to spray paint, or a good excuse to get out of the car and stretch your legs. The Cadillac Ranch was created as an art installation, where 10 Cadillac cars are buried nose down in the ground outside Amarillo, TX. Travelers are welcome to spray paint whatever they like on the cars, and are encouraged to snap a picture of their artwork as this is a fairly popular roadside attraction and the art doesn't last long before it's covered up by someone else.
Leaning Tower of Niles
I may never make it over to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, so we've settled on exploring the Leaning Tower of Niles in Niles, IL. This is a half size replica of the original Leaning Tower of Pisa, but with a lot fewer people. Have some fun with this tower while in town exploring. We spend some time posing for pictures with the tower just like they do in Italy.
Prince Edward Island Welcome Sign
Like many other road trippers, we often take pictures with provincial and state signs. The PEI welcome sign is one of the best provincial signs we've come across. It even has a cardboard cut-out of a lobster that you can stick your face through for photos.
The Happy Rock
We discovered this roadside attraction in Gladstone, BC while on our first road trip across Canada. We had no clue what this was, but it caught our eye, so we pulled over to check it out. It turns out that it's just a public washroom and gift shop. It offers a quick break from the road, and reminds me of humpty dumpty.
Marilyn Monroe Statue
The "Forever Marilyn" statue stands 26 feet tall, and was made as a tribute to the late Marilyn Monroe. It's a beautiful statue. When we first saw the statue, it was located in Palm Springs, CA. I've recently heard that it has been moved to New Jersey.
